Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is for individuals who have technical expertise and management experience in a recreation sector, and who wish to conduct safety audits on recreation organisations.

It provides the recreation sector with safety auditors who have certified standards of professional practice, and in turn enables confidence in the safety procedures of businesses offering recreation activities.

The Adventure Activities optional strand is for those specialising in auditing adventure activities as defined in regulation 4 of the Health and Safety at Work (Adventure Activities) Regulations 2016.

The Incident and Accident Investigations optional strand is for those specialising in applying their auditing knowledge and skills to undertake incident and accident investigations in recreation situations.

Graduates will contribute to the health, cultural, social and economic wellbeing of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Audit a recreation organisation for compliance with the appropriate safety audit standard.
- Apply knowledge of audit principles, procedures and methods to a safety audit of a recreation organisation.
- Apply knowledge of legal and contractual requirements to a safety audit of a recreation organisation.
- Apply knowledge of recreation Safety Management Systems and their purpose to the audit process.
- Communicate effectively and within scope with people at all levels in recreation organisations to achieve audit objectives as a safety auditor.

Graduates of the Adventure Activities strand will also be able to:
- Apply the Safety Audit Standard for Adventure Activities to a safety audit of a recreation organisation providing adventure activities.

Graduates of the Incident and Accident Investigations strand will also be able to:
- Conduct incident and accident investigations in recreation situations.
Education pathways
This qualification may build on senior outdoor instruction qualifications such as the:
- New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Leadership (Instruction) (Level 5) with strands in Alpine, Bush, Caving Streamway, Education Outside The Classroom, Mountain Biking (Grade 4), Rock Climbing, Canoeing, High Ropes, Sea Kayaking, and Whitewater Kayaking [Ref: 3661]
- New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Leadership (Guiding) (Level 5) with strands in Bush, Caving, Mountain Biking (Grade 4), National Raft Guide (Grade III), National Raft Guide (Grade IV/V), National River Boarding Guide (Grade III), National River Boarding Guide (Grade IV/V), Rock Climbing, Canoeing, High Wire, Sea Kayaking, and Whitewater Kayaking [Ref: 3660]
- New Zealand Diploma in Outdoor and Adventure Education (Multi-skilled) (Level 5) [Ref: 3766]
or other qualifications, which recognise the advanced technical recreational skills and safety management knowledge in the learner's chosen audit area.

This qualification may lead to further higher level study in Occupational Health and Safety and/or Industrial Health and Safety.
Employment pathways
This qualification can lead to employment as a safety auditor in the recreation sector. Credits
