Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide commercially competent graduates for the joinery sector who are able to operate unsupervised as joiners in specialist or generalist joinery companies. Graduates of this qualification will be able to work to the standards of trade practice for joinery that can provide employers with confidence in the products they manufacture.
This qualification will provide a credential for individuals intending to work or already working in the industry as joiners, that will support their career opportunities across the joinery sector. The strands in this qualification allow graduates to specialise in areas of joinery such as cabinetry, timber door and window, timber stairs, and bench tops and specialty surfaces. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of a range of manufacturing methods to produce joinery items to a commercially viable standard. - Operate to and maintain the required standards of a commercially competent tradesperson. - Develop and maintain ongoing learning and emerging work practices specific to joinery manufacture. - Provide leadership for people working in the joinery manufacturing environment. - Apply knowledge of health and safety practices, approved codes of practice, industry standards and material safety data to the production of joinery items. - Communicate effectively and professionally with clients, suppliers and other trades to build and maintain positive working relationships. - Use measurements and calculations to produce joinery items to a commercially viable standard. - Interpret project specifications, sketches, product details and plans to support the production of joinery items. - Set up, operate and undertake basic maintenance on machinery used to produce joinery items. - Optimise materials and work methods to produce joinery items expected in a commercial environment. Graduates of the Cabinetry strand will also be able to: - Set up, operate and undertake basic maintenance on specialist machinery used to produce joinery cabinetry items. - Apply knowledge of materials, hardware and relevant standards to manufacture and assemble joinery cabinetry items for use in residential or commercial buildings. - Install joinery cabinetry items in residential or commercial buildings meeting industry standard and customer requirements. Graduates of the Timber Door and Window strand will also be able to: - Set up, operate and undertake basic maintenance on specialist machinery used to produce timber doors and windows. - Apply knowledge of materials, hardware and relevant standards to manufacture timber door and window joinery items, and install hardware for use in residential or commercial buildings. Graduates of the Stairs strand will also be able to: - Apply knowledge of materials and relevant standards to manufacture stairs from timber or composite materials for use in residential or commercial buildings. Graduates of the Bench Top and Specialty Surfaces strand will also be able to: - Set up, operate and undertake basic maintenance on specialist machinery used to produce bench tops and other specialty surfaces. - Apply knowledge of materials, and their properties to manufacture bench tops and other specialty surfaces for use in residential or commercial buildings. |

- NCEA Level 2 construction vocational pathway; - New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills with strands in Allied Trades, Carpentry, and Joinery (Level 3) [Ref: 2834]; - New Zealand Certificate in Building, Construction, and Allied Trades Skills (Level 3) [Ref: 3845]. This qualification may lead to other New Zealand construction related trades qualifications, such as: - New Zealand Certificate in Construction Related Trades (Supervisor) (Level 4) [Ref: 2381]. |
