Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the equine breeding industry with individuals who have the skills and knowledge to assist with all aspects of breeding, mating, and the early education of young horses.

Graduates will benefit by having recognition of their skills both nationally and internationally, and pathway to further qualifications in the equine breeding industry.

The breeding industry will benefit from this qualification by having qualified stud staff who are able to contribute effectively in the workplace.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Assist with the mating of mares over the breeding season.
- Assist with the foaling of mares over the breeding season.
- Assist with routine handling procedures and provide routine health and nutritional needs during the weaning process and the early education of weaned foals to yearling stage.
- Assist with routine day to day care of yearlings during preparation for on-site sale or auction.
- Assist with routine day to day care of paddocked horses on the stud.
- Assist with the prevention, identification and treatment of horse health problems.
- Participate as an effective member of an equine breeding team by maintaining personal wellbeing, communicating with team members and contributing to health and safety.
Education pathways
This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Equine Skills (Level 2) [Ref: 2375].
This qualification leads to the New Zealand Certificate in Breeding (Senior Stud Groom) (Level 4) [Ref: 2371].
Employment pathways
Graduates of this qualification may be employed as stud groom in the thoroughbred, standardbred or sporthorse industries.
