Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the electrical industry with commercially competent registered electricians who have advanced and broad operational, technical, and theoretical skills and knowledge to carry out a full range of prescribed electrical work in their industry sector in accordance with the Electricity Act 1992, and can manage electrical projects.
This qualification is for those who are already registered electricians and wish to progress their career as an Electrical Inspector, managers, or specialists in the electrical industry. The qualification includes the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) licensing requirements to become eligible to register as an Electrical Inspector. Graduates will be able to apply to the EWRB for registration once they have been awarded this qualification. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Interpret and install safe electrical systems in accordance with legislative and customer requirements - Create electrical drawings using CAD - Carry out fault diagnosis and testing of electrical systems and equipment operating on extra-low voltage and low voltage to an advanced level using specialised test and diagnostic equipment - Manage safe working procedures and practices; and identify and control hazards in wide ranging work environments including the requirements of working in damp situations and special electrical situations - Apply advanced knowledge of electrical regulations and relevant non-electrical legislation in the electrical industry - Work ethically and professionally within the electrical industry and communicate effectively with stakeholders to provide solutions relating to the electrical industry - Apply the principles of small business management and project management to achieve specified project outcomes |

Education pathways |
This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory and Practice (Trade) (Level 4) [Ref: 2388].
On completion of this qualification graduates may progress to higher level qualifications within the electrical industry such as the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering [Ref: 112950], or they may progress to degree level programmes. |

While most candidates will be registered electricians, it is not an entry requirement for the qualification. However, candidates must be registered before they can be awarded the qualification.
