Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this programme is to enable graduates to develop research and evaluation skills allowing them to plan for applied research within social work, counselling, and community development, contexts and in related fields in health, education and welfare. Students acquire an understanding of the challenges and opportunities in these contexts that can be explored through applied research. Graduates engage with employers, industries, cultures, and communities. Through transdisciplinary engagement across the major categories of social practice, they can identify, define and contextualise important issues to enhance social justice and challenge structural inequality, with a strong focus on Māori and indigenous practice. Graduates plan for, relevant research projects aiming to provide solutions and innovations that influence practice.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Practice(Social Practice)will be able to:1.Criticallyengage in scholarship and advanced specialised knowledge to remainprofessionallycurrent.2.Engage in self-reflection on practice and recognise the potential to influence applied professional practice, through enhancedprofessionalunderstanding.3.Working in the context of practice, improve communication across disciplines and cultures and social practice sub-disciplines within changing environments.4.Engage critically with the various meanings of social justice through Te Tiriti o Waitangi and indigenous lenses, ensuring appropriate background knowledge is employed when pursuing planning to conduct culturally responsive applied research within social practice fields.5.Analyse wider social policies and social discourses that limit to enhance service user and practitioner capacities and potentials, with the aims of creating opportunity and empowering individuals, groups and communities.
Education pathways
This programme may build on the foundation of Bachelor's level study in a social practice area such as social work, counselling, or community development, or in a related field in health, education, and welfare. It may lead to further study in Higher Education or Professional Practice areas.
Employment pathways
This Programme does not lead directly to professional registration but is rather focussed on producing highly versatile professionals who have the necessary skills to engage independently in a broad range of activities related to their practice environments. Social Practice graduates develop research skills to assist in solving particular organisational problems and develop speciality skills related to current practice needs. Entry Requirements
General admission requires applicants to: Have a bachelor's degree (or level 7 Graduate Diploma) in the same or similar discipline; or Provide documentary evidence of outcomes in the discipline work environment to demonstrate an ability to perform in the programme and commit to achieving its outcomes. International applicants and any Domestic applicant for whom English, Māori or NZ Sign is not their first language must also provide evidence that they have the necessary English language proficiency required for the Programme as described in the NZQA rules.

The PGCertAP-SPis a 60 credit level 8 programme. The programme is composed of three compulsory 15-credit level 8 courses, or as and a choice of an elective courses. Students are required to progressively develop critical thinking skills appropriate to level, within a transdisciplinary educational space. Practice and work-based issues are central to the academic framework, which thereby supports the development of in relevant professional/discipline understanding within social practice and related fields.
