Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the maritime industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required by relevant international conventions to manage coastal or off-shore vessel operations as skipper on a fishing vessel (over 45 metres) or master on a commercial vessel up to 500 GT.
Graduates will meet the requirements of International Convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Fishing Vessel Personnel (STCW-F) and Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). The qualification is for experienced seafarers intending to progress to command roles on fishing or commercial vessels. |

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Manage the planning and conduct of a coastal or offshore passage. - Ensure a safe navigational watch and manage operation of the vessel. - Direct vessel emergency response procedures. - Manage the loading and stowage of cargoes. - Ensure compliance with legislative requirements. |

This qualification leads to the: - New Zealand Diploma in Fishing Vessel Operations (Level 6) with an optional strand in Fishing Vessel Skipper [Ref: 2893]. - New Zealand Diploma in Nautical Science (Level 6) [Ref: 2515]. |
