Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the pork production industry with individuals who have the knowledge and skills to assist with all aspects of pig feeding and health in a pig unit.

The qualification has an optional strand to recognise the specialist nature of breeding activities both pre and post farrowing.

Employees will benefit by having improved skills and knowledge which enables the industry to remain internationally competitive, and also will enhance their own employment opportunities across the pork production industry.

The community will benefit by having trained people who are able to manage biosecurity risks and waste management within their workplaces, thereby reducing the potential to negatively affect the wider community and nation.

Graduates will be working under general supervision and may be collaborating with others in the team.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Monitor and maintain hygiene conditions optimal to pig health, and manage effluent requirements on a pig farm.
- Apply knowledge of pig nutritional requirements, to prepare feed rations for pigs, and feed pigs.
- Maintain pig herd health through prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of health problems in pigs.
- Maintain the care, welfare, and productivity of a grower pig herd from weaning to finishing.
- Establish the care and welfare requirements for a breeding herd from mating to weaning.

Graduates of the Farrowing Care strand will also be able to:
- Implement pre and post farrowing processes for the selection, reproduction, care and welfare of sows and boars in a breeding herd.
Education pathways
This qualification may build on the New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Skills (Level 2) [Ref: 2218].

This qualification leads to the New Zealand Certificate in Pork Production (Management) (Level 4) with an optional strand in Pig Farm Production Planning [Ref: 4222].
Employment pathways
Graduates may be employed as a stockperson or piggery general farm hand on a pig farm.
