Strategic Purpose Statement
The Graduate Diploma in Primary Mathematics Teaching is designed primarily for in-service primary school teachers. It fulfils a need for increased mathematics teaching capabilities across the primary school sector to increase the number of school students proceeding into science and technology specialisations and thinking with evidence.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this programme and awarded this qualification will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge of mathematics and statistics that underpins aspects of the NZ mathematics curriculum relevant to their students.

Discuss aspects of the deterministic and stochastic nature of mathematics, their relevance to society and to mathematics teaching.

Assess the effectiveness with which particular learning experiences address fundamental mathematics concepts and understandings about the deterministic and stochastic nature of mathematics.

Design and deliver learning experiences that support and inspire students to understand mathematics knowledge and concepts.

Outline the foundations of alternative approaches to the teaching of mathematics and justify the choice of approach in a particular context.

Identify and prioritise challenges and opportunities in mathematics teaching, and devise strategies to meet the most significant of these in a particular context.

Contribute to the field of practice-led research in mathematics teaching.

Advocate for effective mathematics teaching and be a positive change agent within the school and beyond.

To be admitted to these programmes, applicants must:

Hold a bachelor degree or a diploma and experience considered equivalent to a bachelor degree.
Be registered and working as a practising teacher in Years 0 - 8 in a New Zealand school.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
