Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide New Zealand with individuals who can safely and effectively participate in outdoor experiences.
This qualification will provide a diverse range of workplaces, communities, and education organisations with graduates who hold the essential technical skills needed to maintain own personal safety while undertaking outdoor experiences in familiar environments which are low risk, low technical.
Graduates will be able to operate under the direct supervision and guidance of an outdoor leader or instructor.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Prepare for their own outdoor experience, taking into account, equipment, weather, terrain, and logistic requirements.
- Operate under a framework of kaitiakitanga that includes respect for the tikanga and kawa of local iwi or hapū, sustainability and the environment while undertaking an outdoor experience.
- Manage self safely while undertaking their own outdoor experience in low-technical, low-risk environments, including meeting requirements for food, water and equipment.
- Apply technical skills to participate in specific outdoor recreation activities in the outdoor environment.
Education pathways
This qualification may build on the National Certificate of Education Achievement - Vocational Pathway: Service Sector Industry.
Graduates may progress to the New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Experiences (Level 4) [Ref: 2571].
Graduates of this qualification may wish to undertake further study that leads to higher level New Zealand qualifications in other Outdoor Recreation areas.
Employment pathways
Achievement of this qualification may lead to entry-level employment (paid or volunteer) in the Outdoor Recreation or Outdoor Adventure Guiding sectors.
This qualification prepares individuals to operate safely and competently in low-risk, low-technical outdoor environments while undertaking roles such as:
- Pest Control
- Track Maintenance
- Defence Force Field Personnel
- New Zealand Land Search and Rescue Personnel

Entry Requirements
Organisations or workplaces within the Outdoor Recreation sector may be covered by The Children's Act 2014 dependent on their organisation type or whether they provide services to organisations' responsible for children and/or youth.
Where a learner engages with an organisation and/or activity that is covered by The Children's Act 2014, they must successfully meet the safety check requirements.

Level

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
