Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the Fire Protection industry and the Building Sector with competent inspectors of existing buildings and/or buildings under construction, in relation to passive fire protection for new and/ or existing installations.
Graduates will work independently in accordance with the New Zealand Building Act, New Zealand Building Code, and regulations. This qualification aims to benefit building owners and occupiers, constructors, the insurance sector, and the general public by providing the skills required to become an inspector (i.e. Independent Qualified Person (IQPs)) who will be responsible for ensuring passive fire protection systems are compliant with the relevant Building Consent and Compliance Schedule. The qualification strands allow specialisation. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Plan and prepare for inspections of passive fire protection systems in buildings. - Develop and manage appropriate reports, records and documentation for passive fire protection. - Apply a broad knowledge of fire safety design in buildings, and passive fire products and systems, to all aspects of passive fire protection. - Work safely on and around the work site. Graduates of the Routine Compliance Inspections strand will also be able to: - Conduct routine inspections of passive fire protection systems in buildings to assist with the compliance process. Graduates of the Construction Monitoring strand will also be able to: - Conduct building inspections of passive fire protection systems in buildings during construction to determine their compliance with the Building Consent. |

This qualification can build on the New Zealand Certificate in Passive Fire Protection Installation (Level 3) [Ref: 4110].
This qualification may also lead to the: - New Zealand Certificate in Fixed Fire Protection Systems (Level 4) [Ref: 2577]; or - New Zealand Certificate in Fire Detection and Alarm Systems (Level 4) [Ref: 2575]; or - New Zealand Certificate in Fire Protection Systems Technology (Level 4) with strands in Fire Detection and Alarm Systems, and Fixed Fire Protection Systems [Ref: 2579] or - New Zealand Diploma in Engineering with strands in Fire Engineering (Level 6) [Ref: 2612]. This qualification may also lead to higher level qualifications in management or engineering. |
