Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification provides all sectors of the drilling industry with people who can work safely within a drilling environment.
Graduates will gain the skills and knowledge required in the drilling industry in order to be familiar with drilling equipment and tools on a drilling site under direct supervision.
This qualification is targeted at people as either a pre-employment or entry-level qualification within the drilling industry.
This qualification has been made flexible to allow study or training to take place within a variety of drilling environments.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Comply with health, safety and environmental requirements to participate in risk assessment to work safely in a drilling workplace.
- Apply knowledge of drilling systems and processes applicable to a particular drilling environment, to assist with drilling activities.
- Communicate effectively in a drilling environment.
- Assist in safely moving equipment about the drilling site.
Education pathways
This qualification is the first step in the New Zealand drilling qualification pathway and may lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Drilling (Level 4) [Ref: 2622].
This qualification is intended to allow equivalency with the Certificate II drilling qualifications within the Australian Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package (RII09), ie
- RII21109 Certificate II in Drilling Oil/Gas (On shore).
- RII20909 Certificate II in Drilling Operations.
- RII21009 Certificate II in Drilling Oil/Gas (Off shore).
Employment pathways
Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to work in entry-level positions within the drilling industry environment that their programme of study or industry training programme was completed.
Roles may include: Greenhat, Trainee, Lease-Hand, Roughneck, and Offsider.

Qualification Type

Level

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
