Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the plumbing sector with people who are skilled plumbing tradespersons and ready to apply for registration as a licensed plumber under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006.

This qualification is targeted at people working in the plumbing industry and who can fulfil the requirements to obtain a limited trainee authorisation issued by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board.

Graduates will have the skills and knowledge required to safely carry out sanitary plumbing work within the scope of an authorised plumber.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply practical knowledge of installation, commissioning and maintenance to complete work with water supply systems for sanitary plumbing.
- Apply practical knowledge of installation, commissioning and maintenance to complete work with foul water systems for sanitary plumbing.
- Apply practical knowledge of installation, commissioning and maintenance to complete work with hot water supply systems.
- Apply practical knowledge of installation, commissioning and maintenance to complete work with sanitary appliances and fixtures.
- Apply practical knowledge of plumbing drawings and specifications to interpret and produce drawings and records of as-built work.
- Apply the legislative responsibilities of a licensed plumber to plumbing work.
- Apply practical knowledge of building penetrations to maintain the integrity of building structures and weather tightness.
- Apply practical knowledge of installation and maintenance to solid fuel space heaters.
- Work with consideration of other trades and related services on site and practice ethically.
- Apply material science and selection, trade science, and trade calculations to complete work with plumbing systems.
- Apply safe working practices and environmentally sustainable considerations to complete work with plumbing systems.

This qualification may build on the New Zealand Certificate in Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying (Level 3) [Ref: 2660].

This qualification leads on to the New Zealand Certificate in Plumbing (Level 5) [Ref:3838].
Employment pathways
Graduates will have met the competence requirements for a career in the plumbing industry.
