Strategic Purpose Statement |
This qualification is designed to provide the infrastructure works industry with capable staff who have the knowledge and skills to produce quality bituminous surfacing. These people may become leading hands or second-in-charge to the site supervisor. They will be able to work with limited or no supervision.
Graduates of this qualification will have a strong theoretical grounding coupled with the practical skills to safely and effectively work in the surfacing sector, and contribute to building quality infrastructure. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Identify hazards and take precautions to maintain safety and the environment. - Apply knowledge of bituminous surfacings, materials, and plant and equipment used for bituminous surfacing construction operations. - Apply knowledge of control measures to ensure quality products are produced on-site. - Identify and notify the nature and extent of site works. Graduates of the Bituminous Mixes strand will also be able to: - Construct quality bituminous mix layers. Graduates of the Chipseal strand will also be able to: - Construct quality chipseal. Graduates of the Slurry strand will also be able to: - Construct quality slurry surfaces. |

This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works (Level 3) [Ref: 2523], the New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works Plant and Equipment (Level 3) [Ref: 2521], and can lead to Infrastructure Works qualifications at Level four.

It is recommended that people achieve the New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works (Level 3) [Ref: 2523], or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and experience, before attempting this qualification.
