Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the resource recovery and waste disposal industry with people who have the advanced technical skills and knowledge required to work as senior operators and first-line supervisors within their particular sector.
Learners will benefit by having a qualification which recognises the skills and knowledge required of a senior operator/first-line supervisor to enable improved job performance and a credential to enhance employment opportunities. This qualification is targeted at experienced operators from within the industry, or people with relevant similar experience in other industries who are looking to enter the resource recovery industry. Graduates will be responsible for their own performance and safety within the workplace and have responsibility for the performance and safety of their team. They will have the skills and knowledge required to provide technical support to those operating in a resource recovery workplace relevant to their chosen strand. In addition, they will be able to identify new opportunities for their operation in the ever-changing resource recovery and/or waste disposal workplace. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Monitor legislative and regulatory compliance, and safe systems of work within the workplace and respond to issues of non-compliance as required to meet workplace policies and procedures in a resource recovery environment. - Apply concepts, principles and/or philosophies of environmental sustainability relevant to the New Zealand resource recovery industry to their work role in a resource recovery environment. - Supervise staff, and communicate appropriately with internal staff, clients, local bodies, government organisations, and the general public as required to meet relevant workplace policies and procedures in a resource recovery environment. - Co-ordinate machinery/equipment and team members to meet workplace performance, process and quality requirements in a resource recovery environment. Graduates of the Composting strand will also be able to: - Apply in-depth technical knowledge of production and quality issues to plan for and carry out composting processes and related tasks at a composting workplace. Graduates of the Recovery and Recycling strand will also be able to: - Apply in-depth technical knowledge of recovery and/or recycling processes and products to contribute to continuous improvement within the workplace. Graduates of the Scrap Metal Recycling strand will also be able to: - Apply in-depth technical knowledge to uplift and discharge scrap metal and carry out related planning and duties at a scrap metal recycling workplace. Graduates of the Solid Waste strand will also be able to: - Apply in-depth technical knowledge to process controlled waste and carry out related duties at a solid waste workplace. |

This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Resource Recovery (Level 3) with strands in Composting, Recovery and Recycling, Scrap Metal Recycling, and Solid Waste, and an optional strand in Hazardous Waste [Ref: 2744].
This qualification may lead to business management qualifications such as the New Zealand Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4) [Ref: 2456]. |
