Strategic Purpose Statement
The Bachelor of Animation is designed to deliver an industry-aligned, adaptive animation curriculum. This curriculum aims to develop in learners: understanding of, appreciation for, and proficiency in the craft of animated storytelling; art and design skills for visual communication; critical investigative, reflective, ethical and transdisciplinary thinking skills; effective studio practice, project-management, communication and business skills; proficiency in a range of traditional, contemporary and emerging technologies for animation; and an understanding of animation history, media theory and other critical contexts influencing contemporary practice. The Bachelor of Animation curriculum provides opportunities for learners to develop a T-shaped skillset in animation, with generalist foundations and specialism in a major, and also prepares them for study at Honours level through the development of academic and research skills. The Bachelor degree also aims to foster students' creative and cultural identities throughout this process.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Bachelor of Animation are able to:
1. integrate a range of skills, processes, technologies and theories to develop animation assets for multiple media platforms, that emotionally engage audiences and contribute to the communication of clear and compelling narratives;
2. contribute significant personal artistic and creative input to the design, development and realisation of animated works;
3. generate transdisciplinary strategies to devise innovative solutions to creative problems;
4. evaluate the needs, pressures and business realities of the animation industry to function effectively as animation professionals in a variety of authentic work roles and settings;
5. investigate and critically analyse contextual knowledge, for synthesis with practice, to contribute valuable skills, perspectives and knowledge to the evolving landscape of the Animation Industries and their associated communities.

Learning Outcomes for each Major for Bachelor Graduates

Story and Character
Graduates of the Bachelor of Animation (Story and Character) are also able to:
1. synthesise theories, methods and technologies within drama, animation and post-production to lead the design of story, and develop and animate compelling characters that keep within the aesthetic and narrative frameworks of a production;
2. critically interpret contextual investigations to develop animation references relevant to the production.

World-Building and Visual Effects
Graduates of the Bachelor of Animation (World-Building and Visual Effects) are also able to:
1. synthesise theories, methods and technologies within three-dimensional arts and visual effects, visual communication, film, fashion, set design and architecture to develop and integrate immersive diegetic worlds and effects that communicate the visual essence of a narrative with regard to the overall production.
2. critically interpret contextual investigations to develop computer graphics references which are relevant to the production.

Interactive Media and Games
Graduates of the Bachelor of Animation (Interactive Media and Games) are also able to:
1. synthesise theories, methods and technologies within interactive narrative, programming, animation, visual effects, layout, fashion, set design and architecture to develop interactive animations that communicate the visual essence of a narrative with regard to the overall production.
2. critically interpret contextual investigations to develop interactive digital media, animation and computer graphics references which are relevant to the production.

Entry Requirements
Entry requirements apply regardless of whether the programme is offered on a full-time or part-time basis. For students to be eligible for entry into the programme, the following criteria must be met: Portfolios
All applicants must provide evidence of creative abilities and potential in the form of a portfolio.
* a good portfolio may contain a variety of work; animations, sketches, drawings, painting, mixed media, multimedia, photography, sculpture, etc.;
* portfolio specifications and requirements will be provided to all applicants to assist in their construction.

English Language requirements
International students who have English as a Second or Other Language, must have within the preceding two years, achieved or surpassed at least one of the English proficiency outcomes listed below:
* IELTS test: Score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5
* TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
* TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 79 or higher (with a writing score of 20)
* University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations: FCE or CAE with a score of 52 or higher
* NZCEL: Level 4 with the Academic endorsement

International students with English as a Second or Other Language will be monitored and supported with their writing tasks in order to ensure that they are showing sufficient progress to enter the Honours Year with English proficiency at or greater than:
* IELTS test: Score of 6.5 with no band score lower that 6
* TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT): Score of 590 (with an essay score of 5.5 TWE)
* TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 90 or higher (with a writing score of 21)
* University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations: CAE with a score of 58 or higher, or CPE with a score of 45 or higher
* NZCEL: Level 5 with the Academic endorsement

If the Programme Committee has reason to believe that a student's level of English has not improved to this level over the previous years of study on the degree, the student will be required to prepare for and sit an English proficiency test to prove they are capable of undertaking the Honours Year.

General Admission Category
To be considered for general admission, applicants must:
* Hold NCEA University Entrance or equivalent CIE/IB grades (preferably including a minimum of 24 NCEA credits at Level 3 in practical art, design or technology subjects), or;
* An appropriate qualification from an overseas secondary school or tertiary institution, deemed by Animation College to be sufficient for admission into a bachelor programme, or;
* have successfully completed an Animation College Qualification, Level 6 or higher.

Discretionary Admission Category
Applicants who do not meet requirements for general admission, and are at least 16 and under age 20, may apply for discretionary admission. Discretionary admission applicants should:
* have reached a significant level of achievement in year 12, or;
* have successfully completed a relevant foundation programme or tertiary qualification;
* all portfolios should show significant art and design skills and experience (applicants may be asked to attend an interview to ascertain their suitability for admission in some cases).

Special Admission Category
Applicants who do not meet requirements for general admission, are age 20 or more, are New Zealand residents or permanent residents, and have relevant experience and skills may apply for special admission. The application must be supported by:
* a professional portfolio, and/or;
* documented industry experience.

International Students
All international students must hold valid medical and travel insurance, and a valid New Zealand Immigration Service student permit, throughout their course of studies.
