Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of the programme is to produce graduates who demonstrate the qualities of Mauri ora with an emphasis on Reflective and critical practice Actualisation of potential Principle driven practice for a purpose Individual excellence for collective success Individual transformation (It is envisaged that individual transformation will lead to whanau transformation through the compounding context of the applied practice.) Graduates are eligible to pathway into doctoral level programmes, or alternatively, have the skills necessary to fulfil senior or leadership roles within the field of indigenous knowledge.
Graduate profile
A graduate of He Waka Hiringa is able to Show evidence of advanced knowledge in a specialist area of indigenous knowledge. Understand and apply sophisticated theoretical knowledge including Maori principles and philosophies (or other indigenous equivalent). Critically evaluate the findings and discussions from relevant literature. Rangahau, analyse and argue from evidence. Independently self-reflect on all aspects of learning and practice. Transfer and apply knowledge to new situations. Engage in rigorous intellectual analysis, critique, and problem solving. Contribute to an indigenous community through completion of a community based project; provide leadership within a specific field, and modelling of principle based practice. Pursue lifelong learning, either community based or at doctoral level within a field of indigenous knowledge. Pursue individual excellence for collective success, generating an holistic methodology.

Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for this programme are that akonga are: 1. A New Zealand citizen (or citizen of Australia, Tokelau, Niue, Cook Islands) or permanent resident. (Alternatively for international fee paying akonga an IELTS score of 7.0 is required.) AND 2. A minimum of 16 years of age or over (unless exemption has been granted) at the commencement of the programme. AND Meet the eligibility, suitability for admission and external support criteria as outlined in the Programme Pre-Enrolment Guidelines. Pre-Enrolment Guidelines An undergraduate degree or equivalent in any relevant area Or Documentary evidence of a high order of indigenous knowledge gained through formal study, professional or other experience, and have demonstrated interest in, and aptitude for, scholarship And A Project-based idea that connects to the land, ocean, sky, people, or some other elemental aspect of the environment, And Significant contribution to Maori society, or other indigenous people/culture, And Kaitiaki - letters of support from hapu, iwi, or community group(s). Note: All applicants are required to meet with the Interview Panel to present their applications
