Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the mining and quarrying industries with people who have sufficient foundation knowledge and ability to work safely in the industry at entry level.

The mining and quarrying industry includes surface and underground sectors. The surface sector can include mining, quarrying, and/or processing. The underground sector can include mining or tunnelling.

This is a foundation certificate suitable for all entrants to the mining and quarrying industry.

Learners will benefit by having a qualification which recognises the competency requirements for mine workers to work unaccompanied.

The mining and quarrying industry will benefit by having entry-level workers with the skills and knowledge to safely undertake entry-level tasks within the workplace.

Graduates will have the necessary foundation skills and knowledge to work safely within the mining and quarrying industry at an entry level, as directed under supervision.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Understand how health and safety is applied in the mining and quarrying industry, to undertake safety-related tasks, under supervision.
- Demonstrate foundation understanding and ability to safely complete entry-level tasks related to mining and quarrying operations and processes under supervision.
- Communicate orally and in writing at a foundation level, within a mining and quarrying workplace, to contribute to team performance.

This qualification will equip graduates with the skills, knowledge and competencies that will be needed for higher level mining and quarrying qualifications including:
-New Zealand Certificate in Surface Mining and Quarrying, (Level 3) [Ref: 2785]
-New Zealand Certificate in Underground Mining (Level 3) [Ref: 2786]
-New Zealand Certificate in Mining and Quarrying (First-line Supervision) (Level 4) with strands in Surface and Underground [Ref: 2783]
Employment pathways
Graduates are able to safely work under supervision at an entry-level within a mining and quarrying workplace.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
