Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the glass processing industry with commercially competent glass processors who are able to operate unsupervised to the technical, safety, quality and productivity standards of the glass processing industry.

This qualification is for those intending to work as glass processors, and provides recognition of the skills and knowledge of individuals currently working as glass processors in the glass processing industry.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to manufacture a range of glass products for use in residential and commercial applications.

The graduate may complete one or more optional strands to specialise their glass processing capabilities and extend their employment options and career pathway.

Three optional strands in this qualification include: screen printed glass, laminated glass and the operation of Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machinery.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply workplace practices to meet industry standards and codes of practice in the production of glass items.
- Communicate with co-workers, supervisors and managers to achieve designated tasks in a glass processing operation.
- Apply knowledge of tools, materials and manufacturing methods, to the production of glass items.
- Apply workplace practices to manage potential hazards and maintain physical and mental health and safety when working in glass processing.
- Apply information from specifications, sketches and plans to the production of glass items.
- Cut glass manually and by machine.
- Perform edgework, cut outs, notching, drilling and countersinking of glass.
- Use materials and apply work methods to optimise the production of glass items in a commercial environment.
- Maintain knowledge of changes in materials and technological advances in the glass processing industry to keep current with industry practices and standards.
- Manufacture insulating glass units (IGUs).
- Manufacture toughened and heat strengthened glass.

Graduates of the Manufacturing Screen Printed Glass strand will also be able to:
- Manufacture screen printed glass

Graduates of the Manufacturing Laminated Glass strand will also be able to:
- Manufacture laminated glass

Graduates of the Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) Machinery Operation strand will also be able to:
- Operate Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machinery to produce a range of standard and customised glass items.
Education pathways
This qualification builds on any Level 3 qualification from the manufacturing and technology vocational pathway.

This qualification may lead to further higher-level study of other New Zealand construction manufacturing related trades or management qualifications.
Employment pathways
Graduates of this qualification will be able to work in the glass industry as glass processors.
