Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the environmental management sector with individuals who have the skills and knowledge to operate effectively and independently.
This qualification is designed for people planning to work in environmental management.
The strands recognise those who wish to specialise in the fields of marine or terrestrial ecosystems, or conservation operations.
Aotearoa/New Zealand will benefit from having graduates who are able to contribute to environmental management through the application of technical skills and knowledge.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Determine the impacts of global environmental issues on societies and ecosystems (with a focus on Aotearoa New Zealand) and examine mitigation measures.
- Monitor ecosystems using surveying methods and data collection suitable for informing environmental management decisions.

Graduates of the Marine strand will also be able to:
- Identify and monitor a range of ecosystems and organisms by applying knowledge of biology and ecology of plants and animals with a focus on marine environments.

Graduates of the Terrestrial strand will also be able to:
- Identify and monitor a range of ecosystems and organisms by applying of knowledge of the biology and ecology of plants and animals with a focus on terrestrial environments.

Graduates of the Conservation (Operations) strand will also be able to:
- Supervise field operations, projects, and engagement in a conservation setting by applying knowledge of relevant legislation to decision making, designing and maintaining conservation operations projects, and consulting with community, mana whenua and national organisations.

This qualification may lead to the New Zealand Diploma in Environmental Management with strands in Marine and Terrestrial (Level 6) [Ref: 2966].

Credits
