Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is targeted at those who want to achieve trade certification status within the utilities sector, specialising in pipe installations.

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the civil infrastructure works industry with experienced and competent tradespeople, capable of gaining trades certification. It leads to partial fulfilment of the registration requirements with the Civil Trades Certification Board (CTCB).

Graduates are able to safely and independently perform tasks using industry standards and specifications when installing pipes, taking responsibility for their own work and that of others.

The strands will provide tradespeople with the knowledge and skills to produce quality outcomes in a range of pipe installations operations using either trenched or trenchless methodologies and technology
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Ensure on-site health, safety, environment, and quality assurance requirements are met as required for the range of work undertaken by a pipe installations tradesperson
- Interpret infrastructure plans and apply appropriate pipe installation methodology when installing pipes.
- Undertake pipe installations operations using small and large plant and equipment
- Practice effective communication when operating as a tradesperson within a pipe installation team

Graduates of the Trenched strand will also be able to:
- Install underground utilities using appropriate trenched installations methodology and technology

Graduates of the Trenchless strand will also be able to:
- Install underground utilities using appropriate trenchless installations methodology and technology
Education pathways
This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works (Level 2) [Ref: 2522], and may lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works (Site Supervision) (Level 4) [Ref: 2617].

Graduates of the New Zealand Certificate in Pipe Installations with strands in Trenched and Trenchless (Level 4) [Ref: 2694] will have credits towards this qualification.
Employment pathways
Graduates of this qualification will be able to work independently as pipe installations tradespeople in the civil infrastructure industry.

This work can be undertaken in the context of a variety of stakeholders i.e. municipal/local authority contracts, government agencies, water utility network owners and private developments (such as subdivisions).

Likely contexts of work would be:
-Pipelaying
-Reticulation installation and maintenance
-Rehabilitation
-Horizontal directional drilling, and other trenchless installations
-Trenchless pipe rehabilitation/renewal (pipe lining, pipe bursting or other trenchless rehabilitation methodology)

Once graduates have met the requirements of the Civil Trades Certification Board (CTCB), they may register for trade certification.
