Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the marine industry with people who have the knowledge and skills to work in a team, unsupervised, to refit or build new vessels.
This is an entry level qualification for people intending to enter or who are already working in the boat building sector, in the refit and construction of vessels. This qualification includes strands that recognise specific knowledge and practical skills for refit or building new alloy, composite, steel, and wooden boats. Graduates will have the specialised knowledge and skills for refit and construct vessels in either alloy, composites, steel, or wood, dependent upon which strand is achieved. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Apply health and safety practices to ensure own and others' safety, and minimise potential hazards and environmental risk in a boat building work environment. - Collaborate and contribute to the achievement of team objectives; and behave in a professional manner with colleagues, managers, and customers. - Apply specific industry knowledge and terminology to communicate effectively. - Select and use a range of products, materials, hand and power tools and plant and equipment relevant to common tasks for boat building. Graduates of the Alloy strand will also be able to: - Apply knowledge of alloys, materials, and techniques used in alloy boat building. - Interpret boat plans, specifications, and regulations to construct an alloy boat to drawings. Graduates of the Composite strand will also be able to: - Apply knowledge of composites, materials, and techniques used in composite boat building - Interpret boat plans, specifications, and regulations to construct a composite boat to drawings. Graduates of the Steel strand will also be able to: - Apply knowledge of steel, materials, and techniques used in steel boat building. - Interpret boat plans, specifications, and regulations to construct a steel boat to drawings. Graduates of the Wood strand will also be able to: - Apply knowledge of wood, materials, and techniques used in traditional wood boat building. - Interpret boat plans, specifications, and regulations to construct a wooden boat to drawings |

This qualification may build on from:
- National Certificate of Educational Achievement (Level 2) [Ref: 0973]; - National Certificate of Educational Achievement (Level 3) [Ref: 1039; - New Zealand Certificate in Fill and Fair Surfaces (Level 3) [Ref: 3056]; or - New Zealand Certificate in Composites (Level 4) [Ref: 3058]. Graduates of this qualification may progress to: - New Zealand Diploma in Marine Vessel Project Management (Level 6) (New Build/Refit) [Ref: 3127]; - New Zealand Diploma in Composites (Level 6) [Ref: 3059] -or higher level qualifications in the design sector. |
