Strategic Purpose Statement
The Postgraduate Certificate in Midwifery is designed to enable midwives to develop knowledge and capabilities to maximise their own midwifery practice within situations of complexity, and the changing demographics of women and social infrastructure within society. The interdisciplinary context of the programmes will enable graduates to extend their capacity for critical and professional/clinical reasoning for practice, leadership, management and supervision in complex professional environments. Graduates will have developed a range of flexible skills and expertise which will position them well to be responsive to changing health communities. Learning and participating within the interdisciplinary teaching/learning context will enable graduates to transfer this experience to workplace relationships and networks
Graduate profile
A graduate of the Postgraduate Certificate in Midwifery will:
Articulate a professional body of knowledge in relation to provision of complex care in midwifery practice.
Demonstrate analytic rigour in evaluating appropriate management of maternal, foetal and neonatal wellbeing.
Use critical enquiry approaches to evaluate research findings for complex midwifery practice.
Implement highly effective communication and advocacy strategies with colleagues and clients in cultural, and organisational and professional contexts.

Graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in Midwifery may return to complete the PGDipHlthSocPrac (Midwifery).
Employment pathways
The Postgraduate Certificate in Midwifery will be relevant to practitioners from a wide range of midwifery contexts. Graduates will have developed a range of flexible skills and expertise which will position them to be responsive as clinicians and leaders. The postgraduate certificate will facilitate graduates to promote early detection and appropriate management of maternal, foetal and neonatal well-being.

The postgraduate certificate support Midwifery Council of New Zealand's elective education and professional activity section of recertification requirements. Entry Requirements
Candidates are required to have gained an undergraduate degree in Health, Social Practice or a related discipline. Candidates without a relevant undergraduate degree may be able to submit a portfolio to apply for entry on an ad eundum statem basis. Candidates whose first language is neither English nor Maori are required to have a score of 7.0 or better in all bands of the International English Language Test Score (IELTS), or equivalent and will be required to demonstrate the likelihood of being able to successfully achieve programme learning outcomes. In addition, candidates for entry to the midwifery endorsement are required to: * be registered with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand; and * hold a current Annual Practising Certificate; and * have a minimum of one year post-qualifying experience in midwifery practice (or the equivalent as approved by the selection committee); and * be in practice for an average minimum of 16 hours per week over a year. As part of the selection process all candidates will be required to complete a professional disclosure form and supply the names and contact details of two professional referees. Candidates may be required to attend an individual interview.
