Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the commercial road transport industry with people who have entry-level skills to undertake vehicle loading and/or yard person duties, including basic driving tasks as directed.

This qualification is suitable for learners such as school leavers, or people who have little or no prior learning or experience in commercial road transport and who wish to commence a career in this area. Learners will benefit by having a qualification that enables improved job performance and enhanced employment opportunities in the field of commercial road transport.

This qualification does not permit the holder to drive a motor vehicle on New Zealand roads without a current relevant driver licence issued by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Comply with the commercial road transport regulatory environment, including health and safety obligations, while working in a yard or loading area.
- Apply knowledge of vehicle systems, types, and technologies when undertaking workplace tasks as directed in a yard or loading area.
- Apply knowledge of loading principles to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of freight while working in a yard or loading area.
- Demonstrate sound driving techniques and strategies while working in a yard or loading area.

- New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Road Transport (Heavy Vehicle Operator) (Level 3) [Ref: 3089-];
- New Zealand Certificate in Passenger Service (Level 3) with strands in School Bus, Urban Bus, and Long Distance Bus [Ref: 2701];
- New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Road Transport (Heavy Haulage Class 1 Pilot) (Level 4) [Ref: 3090];
- New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Road Transport (Specialist Driver) (Level 4) with strands in Transportation of Logs, Heavy Haulage Transportation, Livestock Transportation, Dangerous Goods Transportation, Waste Transportation, General Cartage, and Groundspreading [Ref: 3091].
- It may also lead to higher level study in business.
Employment pathways
