Strategic Purpose Statement
The Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Leadership and Management) aims to grow leaders and managers in the field of early childhood education. The qualification explores in-depth the convergences and divergences between leadership, mentoring and management, to support understanding of the role of a range of leaders in the early childhood profession.
Students learn to:
* articulate what it means to be an authentic leader in the early childhood sector
* critique foundational leadership approaches and evaluate their relevance for the early childhood sector
* engage with the ethical basis of leadership
* foster communities of learning within an early childhood context
* develop and maintain a critically reflective stance in order to further inform their learning
* critically analyse key management processes to ensure that knowledge and understanding is developed for mentoring teaching professionals in the early childhood sector in a sustainable manner
Graduate profile
The Graduate profile is based on the Post Graduate Conceptual Framework.
On completion of this qualification graduates will:
* be able to critique a range of leadership and management aspects and issues in early childhood contexts
* have an in-depth understanding of leadership approaches including the knowledge, skills and dispositions required to be both an ethical and authentic leader
* be able to relate the significance of the knowledge gained in the program to the context of early childhood education
* have a sound understanding of critical management processes required to operate an organisation
* have developed knowledge and skills in mentoring adults and building a professional early childhood community of learners
* be well-informed in respect to leading and sustaining an organisational culture that fosters growth
Education pathways
Graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Leadership and Management) are able to pathway into the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Early Childhood Education) or a Master's program, such as the proposed Master of Early Childhood Education or the Master of Education (Early Childhood Education).
Employment pathways
Graduates of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Leadership and Management) will seek leadership and management positions in early childhood services. Entry Requirements
Applicants for the Postgraduate Certificate must have a Bachelor degree at Level 7 (360 credits) or higher qualification. Applicants for whom English is a second language and Te Reo Maori is not their first language must provide evidence of an Academic IELTS score issued within the last two years of at least 6.5 overall, 6.5 in writing with no band score lower than 6 or equivalent. IELTS scores may be combined from two tests as long as on one test a minimum of 6.5 overall and 6.0 in each component is achieved.
