Strategic Purpose Statement
To provide students with a broad base of photographic skills, specialising in digital photography with industry experience.
Graduate profile
On completion of the qualification graduates will be able to effectively operate a digital SLR camera. Manage, prepare, and output digital files. Utilise a variety of current industry-standard workflow software. Produce optimum portrait and still life images utilising artificial and natural light. Realise a realistic and individualised plan for a specific field of photography and to experience the photographic work environments and current practices involved in the photographic industry. Comprehend the past, present, and future expectations of photography and its value within the amateur and professional sectors. Comprehend various facets of applied photography and the basic techniques used within various specialised areas. Fully realise the photographic potential of subject matter. Interpersonal Skills Demonstrate time management skills and quality standards to prescribed and self-directed activities. Effective communication skills including the ability to critique the work of others in an appropriate manner. Knowledge Research and apply techniques to photographic output. Photographic history, equipment, techniques, compositional conventions and nomenclature. Attributes Work independently to meet a set objective Education Pathways. Further study on the Level 6 Diploma in Digital Photography or continue to the Otago Polytechnic Bachelor of Visual Arts. Employment Pathways Self-employed photographer, print, photojournalism, photographers assistant, retail.

Entry Requirements
NCEA Level 2. IELTS 5.5 Academic (no lower than 5.0 in any subtest). For acceptable alternatives refer to the English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.

Skills for tertiary study (including literacy and numeracy) may be acquired through study, work and/or life experience. Students who can demonstrate these skills may be approved for alternative entry. Literacy and numeracy assessments are available.

Level

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
