Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of this programme is to enable graduates to be musically and academically competent practitioners who are able to apply the skills, knowledge and attributes necessary for successful participation in global music and creative industries.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Bachelor of Musical Arts will be able to:
1. Contribute as authentic, confident, artistic and self-motivated practitioners to the growth of strong local and global music communities.
2. Use entrepreneurship to effectively represent their professional creative practice to the global market place.
3. Embed sound business practices and principles to maximise a sustainable career.
4. Articulate an artistic identity informed by theory, practice, reflection and cultural contexts.
5. Apply a range of theory, improvisation, technology, composition and arranging literacies to a musical context.
6. Adapt to the use of emerging technologies in the music industry and wider creative industries.
7. Integrate an understanding of tikanga, and Maori traditional and contemporary culture in their professional practice.

Applicants under 20 years:


University Entrance - NCEA Level 3
Preference will be given to applicants with Merit or Excellence passes in Music.

Consideration will be given to students who progress through other TPP/MAINZ/SIT programme pathways (e.g. Foundation Sound and Music).

Applicants may be required to attend an audition or provide a portfolio of music related work

Special Entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme

or

Applicants over 20 years:

Consideration will be given to applicants aged 20 years or older who do not meet the entry criteria if they can demonstrate a history of work, industry experience which in the opinion of the Programme Managers exhibits a likelihood of success in the programme of study.

Consideration will be given to students who progress through other TPP/MAINZ/SIT programme pathways (e.g. Foundation Sound and Music).

Applicants, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having achieved one of the following

NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance, or

an International Baccalaureate Diploma or Cambridge A¬ level qualification for which the teaching and assessment was conducted in English; or

Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), or
Trinity College London Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL);or

Successful completion of a Bachelor 's Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters' Degree or Doctoral Degree, the language of instruction of which must be in English and which must be from a tertiary education provider from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States or

Successful completion of one of the following internationally recognised proficiency tests listed below to the level required of the programme of study and with all scores achieved in a single test during the preceding 2 years

IELTS test - Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5
TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score 5 TWE)
TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18)
Cambridge English Examination - B2 First or B2 First for schools or C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill.
OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
NZCEL - a) Expiring Level b) Current:
a) Level 4 (Academic) b) Level 4 (Academic)
Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 50 with no band score lower than 42
Language Cert - C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill
Trinity ISE - ISE II with no less than distinction in any band

An NZQA approved English Language proficiency test, where the student has achieved an outcome that is equivalent or better than those scores listed for Internationally recognised English language proficiency tests above in relation to the level of intended programme of study or

Completion of all primary education and at least three years secondary education at schools with English as the language of instruction or

Completion of five years of secondary education at schools with English as the language of instruction.

Completion of five years of secondary education at schools with English as the language of instruction.


Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate below 80 per cent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English must provide evidence that they:

Have gained NCEA Level 3 and met New Zealand University Entrance requirements or
Have successfully completed a Bachelor's Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters' Degree or Doctoral Degree, the language of instruction of which must be in English and which must be from a tertiary education provider from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States or
Have achieved a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, CELTA or
Have achieved the required score and with all scores achieved in a single test in one of the internationally recognised English Proficiency tests (specified above) within the preceding two years.
