Graduates of this programme will demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to fulfil management and supervisory roles in the Tourism Industry in a range of contexts including specialist roles relating to their chosen endorsement.
By the time students have successfully completed this programme, they will, as graduates, be able to: understand and apply a range of factors which influence the management of organisations explain the principles and the interdependent roles of the participating sectors of the tourism industry which are relevant to management in the tourism industry explain national and international trends in tourism development strategies, cultural awareness, and tourism management understand, apply and demonstrate bicultural awareness in all aspects of their work within the tourism industry apply knowledge of small business opportunities and operations, including ownership options and business structures. analyse information, identify and evaluate appropriate solutions for the management of small business operations. demonstrate an awareness of and commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti O Waitangi explain the cultural and social diversity of the communities, districts, regions affected by and influencing the tourism industry understand basic Maori concepts such as kaitiakitanga (concept of guardianship or stewardship of the environment), matauranga (traditional knowledge), wahi tapu (sacred place) demonstrate the skills and knowledge when providing visitors with an informed cultural experience including Maori protocol and marae protocol in a tourism context identify and explain by the use of specific examples, the development of Maori participation in tourism development |

Education pathways |
Graduates of this programme may be eligible to apply for entry into a variety of further tertiary education and training programmes relating to this field of study offered by a number of tertiary education providers: for example:
Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Diploma in Business Studies NZIM Diploma in Business Management Bachelor of Tourism Graduates' eligibility to apply for such entry, and the potential for any credit recognition and transfer, is the responsibility of, and negotiable between, the applicant and the further education provider of choice. The Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is one of the only providers of Diploma level study in Tourism in the region, and has achieved many successes in terms of recognition and student placement. Although many students gain employment with national providers e.g. Shotover jet in Queenstown (Trainee driver), others gain employment locally in small tourism operations e.g. Oropi Hot Pools (Marketing Manager) and the local i-site (Visitor Information Centre) and most of the local Travel Retail outlets have BOP Polytechnic graduates employed in them. Other older students have set up their own small tourism operations and consultancy services |

NCEA Level 2: 48 credits including 12 credits in two subjects; or NCEA Level 3: 42 credits including two subjects with 14 credits at level 3; or SFC total of 20 points or less in best four subjects; or completed national certificate in any tourism area
