Strategic Purpose Statement
The programme's aim is to give students a clear level of competence in the use of computer applications for business. It gives them experience in learning to manage computer systems, provide an opportunity for students to learn how to understand and write technical material and to enable them to progress to higher level programmes in this field.
This qualification targets several categories of students, for example:
1. Students who can only afford to study for one year and then need to join the workforce.
2. Those for whom a computing degree is an unrealistic goal, but Level 5 courses may be achievable.
3. Those who do not feel confident enough to commit to 3 years of degree study but may ultimately choose to continue with the BCCT or other degree study.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this programme will have the knowledge and skills to use computer applications competently to complete standard business requirements, understand the role of IT in business organisations, demonstrate their ability to learn new computer applications and operating systems maintain, upgrade and troubleshoot computer systems, understand technical information and effectively communicate to specified audiences, and understand basic object oriented programming concepts.
Education pathways
Students may move onto further learning in the field of Computing, Communications and technology (Level 6) or onto the Bachelor of Computing, Communications and Technology.
Entry Requirements
72 or more NCEA credits @ L2 from best 4 subjects or max 10 from best 4 subjects 6th form cert or appropriate L3 cert, or acceptable aptitude test score approved by programme committee or 20 years of age or over.

Level

The NZQF has ten levels. Level one is least complex and is often entry-level, for example foundation certificates. Levels eight to ten are the most complex, and include post-graduate study.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
