Strategic Purpose Statement
Graduates of this programme are able to demonstrate proficiency on their specialist instrument and perform within an instrumental ensemble to an industry standard commensurate with paid performance work at small to medium sized venues as are commonly found in the New Zealand music industry. Graduates will have skills in the application of music theory, analysis and technology to effectively create and communicate musical ideas. Graduates will have knowledge of the music industry and the business of music to apply to the processes involved in entering the music industry.
Graduate profile
After successful completion of this qualification, graduates will have the skills, knowledge and attributes to be able to demonstrate proficiency on their specialist instrument perform within an instrumental ensemble to an industry standard (commensurate with paid performance work at small to medium sized venues as are commonly found in the New Zealand music industry) demonstrate advanced techniques of sequencing and recording using computer based software demonstrate and apply an advanced knowledge of music theory to song writing and song arrangement within ensembles and technological environments apply time management and self direction to meet performance deadlines communicate effectively within performance groups and with allied technical staff (studio and live sound engineers) demonstrate an awareness of the Treaty of Waitangi, and an awareness and appreciation of Maori cultural identity demonstrate advanced techniques of song writing including word setting and structure demonstrate an advanced understanding of the ethics, attitudes and values inherent in both the local and international music industry be capable, through the academic platform they have achieved, of undertaking further tertiary studies in music

Entry Requirements
Candidates should hold the Tai Poutini Polytechnic Certificate in Contemporary Music Performance or an equivalent qualification or be able to demonstrate knowledge and ability to a similar standard. Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5 or above. Selection Criteria apply: applicants will be go through a selection process that aims to balance the number of each primary instrument in order to best enable effective learning throughout the year. Where a particular instrument is oversubscribed merit will be used to decide the successful applicants. Special Entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme. Please contact the institution for details.
