Strategic Purpose Statement
The Master of Teaching Early Childhood Education (Bilingual) Tohu Paerua o te Whakaako i te Matauranga Kohungahunga (Reorua) aims to equip students with the dispositions, knowledge and skills to become critically reflective, intentional, adaptive, registered early childhood teachers in the bicultural contexts of Aotearoa New Zealand. By providing high quality, guided practice in authentic settings, the qualification aims to deepen students commitment to language, culture and identity as the foundation of children's learning. Students will participate in communities of practice to foster engagement in research and the integration of theory with practice.
Graduate profile
Upon successful completion of the Master of Teaching Early Childhood Education (Bilingual): Tohu Paerua o te Whakaako i te Matauranga Kohungahunga (Reorua), graduates will be able to: Use children's language, culture and identity as the basis for their learning. Justify and integrate knowledge of te Ao Maori, te reo Maori and Tikanga Maori when working with children and families. Synthesise pedagogical and content knowledge to enhance the holistic development of diverse learners in early childhood contexts. Interpret, critique and apply contemporary research to assessing and planning for the learning and care of infants, toddlers and young children. Critique and conduct research to inform practice. Integrate into practice the values of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Contribute to communities of practice. Coordinate and evaluate the creative, innovative and safe implementation of Te Whariki. Implement adaptive expertise in respectful interactions with toddlers, infants and young children, whanau and colleagues to implement Te Whariki. Champion the rights of children to ethical, participatory, inclusive socially just education. Practice ethically and analyse atypical dilemmas. Evaluate and use technology as a tool for children's learning and use technology professionally. Perform as critically reflective and evidence based teachers. Critique contextual and historical influences on learning and teaching. Apply kaupapa Maori principles when researching Use te reo Maori appopriate to the early childhood setting competently and confidently

Entry Requirements
General *New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. *Two satisfactory character references are required which address the NZTC Good Character and Fit to be a Teacher Policy 2007. These should be from persons in positions of trust or responsibility such as an employer, pastor, kaumatua or kuia. References from family, friends or work colleagues will not be accepted. *Proof of identity in the form of Passport. *Satisfactory participation in an entry interview. Academic Academic entry requirements are a minimum of (a) a bachelor degree at level 7 of at least 360 credits (in any discipline) or (b) a bachelor honours degree at level 8 of at least 480 credits (in any discipline) or (c) a Master's degree at level 9 consisting of 240 credits, or d), a Teacher Registration Board or Education Council approved diploma in teaching (primary) and, for all of the above, an average of a B grade or above during the course of study or in the final year of study. All applicants are required to pass (a) a literacy test equivalent to level 6 on the National Adult Literacy and Numeracy tool for adults and (b) a numeracy test equivalent to level 6 of the same tool, with a score of at least 12/20. Applicants for whom English is an additional language must also provide evidence of having achieved an IELTS score of at least 7.0 for each component of the academic version of IELTS. * te reo Maori achievement standards: (a) NCEA level 3 or above in te reo Maori Rangatira Achievement Standards approved for University Entrance, including 14 subject credit requirements across Reading and Writing or (b) a relevant qualification in te reo Maori either at level 5 or 6 on the NZ Qualifications Framework or (c) a level of reading and writing in te reo Maori comparable to one of the above two standards, assessed under examination conditions. In addition, all applicants to the MTECE (Bilingual) must pass an oral and written assessment in te reo Maori.
