Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of this qualification is to provide an entry level qualification in forest operations management for those students who wish to commence work in junior management roles in forestry or harvesting operations in the New Zealand forest industry. This diploma also provides the initial platform for students to progress towards a National Diploma in Forestry (Operations Management) (Level 5), a Diploma in Forest Management (Level 6) or a degree qualification in forestry science or applied management.
Graduate profile
After successful completion of this qualification, students will have the skills and knowledge to be able to: 1. understand the full range of operations undertaken in commercial plantation forestry; 2. plan and monitor production and quality of commercial forestry operations; 3. plan and implement forest inventories for forest management; 4. use the most up-to-date planning tools and technology to collect and manage data including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS); 5. undertake and evaluate forestry and harvesting operational planning; 6. apply knowledge of business management systems in the commercial forestry environment.
Education pathways
Graduates of the Diploma in Forest Operations (Level 5) wanting to pursue a more senior role in operations management may move onto further learning in the National Diploma in Forestry (Operations Management) (Level 5) or the Diploma in Forest Management (Level 6).
Graduates wanting to pursue a career as a technical forester or forestry researcher/scientist may progress to the Bachelor of Forestry Science at University of Canterbury. Pathways are also available for graduates wanting to pursue a career in management, marketing, commerce or finance to progress to the Bachelor of Applied Management (BAM) or to the following degrees at other universities:
* Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) at University of Waikato
* Bachelor of Commerce at University of Canterbury
* Bachelor of Commerce at Lincoln University

Level

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
