Strategic Purpose Statement |
This qualification will provide the snowsport industry with individuals who have applied skills and competencies to operate independently as instructors of intermediate learners in the New Zealand snowschool environment and are able to employ reflective instructional practice to improve their own practice and learner outcomes.
The strands allow snowschool instructors to specialise in the instruction of intermediate ski, snowboard, telemark or cross-country skills for all age groups. Graduates of the optional strand also have the skills and knowledge to operate a snowsport instruction business. This qualification includes embedded internationally recognised technical snowsport instruction (intermediate) industry awards for ski, snowboard and telemark. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Plan, implement and evaluate developmentally appropriate coaching or instruction sessions to promote positive outcomes and meet diverse individual and group learning needs. - Plan, implement and review own performance as a snowschool instructor for continuous improvement. - Develop beginner competence in an alternative snowsport discipline to experience learning. - Identify and respond to health and safety conditions in accordance with snowschool policies and procedures, including reporting hazards, to promote safety of self and customers. - Integrate customer service, professionalism and time management, to role model the consistent provision of positive snowschool experiences for individuals and groups. Graduates of the Ski strand will also be able to: - Integrate safe teaching practices, educational methodology and effective communication skills to instruct, up to and including, advance parallel turns on groomed intermediate slopes. Graduates of the Snowboard strand will also be able to: - Integrate safe teaching practices, educational methodology and effective communication skills to instruct, up to and including, carving on intermediate terrain, basic freestyle and an introduction to off-piste riding. Graduates of the Telemark strand will also be able to: - Integrate safe teaching practices, educational methodology and effective communication skills to instruct, up to and including, linked parallel telemark turns on groomed intermediate slopes. Graduates of the Cross-country strand will also be able to: - Integrate safe teaching practices, educational methodology and effective communication skills to instruct, up to and including intermediate classic technique and skate technique on cross-country skis on groomed intermediate terrain. Graduates of the Business Development strand will also be able to: - Create, execute and evaluate a business plan to improve personal snowsport instruction business. - Apply knowledge of market, customers and business processes to develop and manage a marketing strategy and associated activities to grow business. |

Education pathways |
Graduates may pathway from the New Zealand Certificate in Introductory Snowschool Instruction (Applied) (Level 4) with strands in Ski, Snowboard, Telemark, and Cross-Country [Ref: 3492].
This qualification has no further educational pathways in New Zealand in relation to snowsport skill instruction. Graduates may choose to broaden their skills and experience by undertaking training in broader snowsport or general business qualifications at a higher level. |
