Strategic Purpose Statement |
This qualification is intended for people who teach, care for, or otherwise work with children, adolescents, and their whānau.
This qualification will benefit industry through providing people who can identify when specialist help is needed and what type of help is appropriate. This qualification uses psychological theories and principles, including those within the fields of clinical child psychology, developmental, behavioural and indigenous psychologies, to achieve advanced understanding of child and adolescent behaviour. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of developmental processes and psychological disorders of children and adolescents, including biological, psychological and environmental factors, to explain how they impact on behaviour. - Evaluate how ecological systems such as whānau, family, educational, social, political, and legal factors impact on children and adolescents. - Critically analyse some of the issues children, adolescents and their families and whānau experience to identify those issues that could require intervention and include Māori perspectives of those issues and interventions. - Evaluate whether to refer children and adolescents to relevant services, agencies and organisations for appropriate psychological assessment, intervention, and treatment. - Analyse the ethical and legal issues that impact on work with children and adolescents in Aotearoa New Zealand, including implications of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi, to work safely and competently with young people and their families and whānau. - Apply behavioural principles to help address child and adolescent behaviour. |

This qualification builds on the New Zealand Diploma in Psychology (Level 5) [Ref: 3515].
Graduates of this qualification may continue their studies at a higher level in psychology, social work, or related areas. |
