Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the painting and decorating sector with tradespeople who are capable of completing specific painting and decorating work to the level required of a commercially competent tradesperson and providing leadership to others.
This qualification is for people entering or working in the painting and decorating industry.
The strands recognise the specialised knowledge and skills required to work with Spray Systems, Wallcoverings, and Specialised Coatings.
Graduates will be able to work unsupervised and perform to the required safety, technical, quality and productivity standards expected in the painting and decorating industry.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply legislative requirements, principles of building science and calculations to carry out painting and decorating work to meet industry standards.
- Interpret job plans and specifications to carry out painting and decorating work to a commercially viable standard.
- Plan own work to fit with job requirements and communicate effectively with all parties to painting and decorating work.
- Safely set up, use, and maintain tools and equipment to carry out painting and decorating to meet industry standards.
- Apply knowledge of colour theory to painting and decorating work.
- Select, use, and store painting and decorating products and materials to meet manufacturer's specifications.
- Perform all preparation tasks required before application of coatings to industry standards.
- Carry out application of coatings using brushes and rollers to industry standards.
- Complete post application activities for painting and decorating work to industry standards.
- Develop and maintain on-going learning and currency with emerging work practices for the painting and decorating industry.
- Provide leadership for people working in the painting and decorating industry.
- Operate to and maintain the required standards of a commercially competent painting and decorating tradesperson.

Graduates of the Spray Systems strand will also be able to:
- Plan and carry out all aspects of residential and light commercial spraying to industry standards, including selection and set up of equipment and application of coatings.

Graduates of the Wallcoverings strand will also be able to:
- Plan and carry out all aspects of wallcoverings work to industry standards using standard and advanced techniques.

Graduates of the Specialised Coatings strand will also be able to:
- Plan and carry out all aspects of specialised coatings work to industry standards, including selection, application and remedial work.
Education pathways
This qualification may lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trades Supervision (Level 5) with strands in Residential Building, Commercial Construction, Construction Related Trades, and Construction Related Manufacturing [Ref: 4237].
Employment pathways
Graduates of this qualification will be able to work as painters and decorators.
