Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide organisations with people who have advanced theoretical knowledge and applied skills in communication management and technical communication, and can use their knowledge to communicate effectively, improve communication practices and lead teams within organisations in a wide variety of contexts.

All businesses and communities benefit from people with advanced communication skills to improve organisational efficiency and performance.

This qualification is targeted at employees in professional roles that require advanced communication skills. It is also targeted at those currently working in communication-focussed roles who would benefit from recognition of their skills in the workplace.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Use advanced interpersonal communication principles to communicate effectively with a range of audiences in a variety of organisational contexts.
- Plan, design, write, edit and manage the production of clear, concise, reader-centred documentation for a range of contexts and in a variety of media including online.
- Analyse and evaluate a range of complex communication issues in organisational contexts and recommend appropriate strategies for improvement.

Graduates of the Communication Management strand will also be able to:
- apply public relations principles to plan, implement and evaluate public relations campaigns including crisis management in organisational contexts
- evaluate and apply ethical frameworks to public relations practice
- lead the development of communication policy, systems and strategies in organisational contexts

Graduates of the Technical Communication strand will also be able to:
- manage the technical documentation lifecycle from planning to archiving in an organisational context
- critically evaluate professional documentation and provide practical and effective feedback for improvement
- apply project management skills to complete a technical communication project in an organisational context
Education pathways
This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Communication Studies (Level 5) with strands in Communication Management and Technical Communication [Ref: 3577].
Graduates of this qualification may progress to study at higher levels in the areas of communication, technical communication and communication management.
