Strategic Purpose Statement
The general aim of the proposed postgraduate programmes is to enable IT practitioners and recent IT graduates to gain internationally recognised skills and knowledge in applied information technology. They will be able to use their enhanced knowledge, skills and capabilities to obtain employment in positions of responsibility that relate to the electives they choose, thus helping to meet the strong demand from government, industry and the wider community for ICT expertise. Some may choose to undertake further studies.
The specific aim of the Master's Degree is to enable students to undertake an advanced programme of study involving the application of knowledge about information technology, and combining coursework with research in order to prepare for further study or to obtain a more senior position in their employment.
Graduate profile
Master of Applied Information Technology graduates will be able to:
* research, analyse and argue from evidence
* critically analyse current literature and research findings in information technology
* demonstrate mastery of sophisticated theoretical subject matters in the field of information technology
* engage in rigorous intellectual analysis, criticism and problem-solving in the field of information technology
* design and complete significant information technology research projects to internationally recognised standards
* identify practical applications of their research and relate their findings to academic and professional literature in information technology
* recognise, evaluate and determine appropriate responses to ethical and professional issues arising in the application of information technology
* communicate complex ideas and research outcomes clearly and effectively to clients, other researchers and information technology professionals
* Work independently and apply advanced knowledge and skills as an independent consultant or in an information technology research or management role in an organisation.
Master of Applied Information Technology graduates who have completed a 90 credit thesis will also be able to:
* demonstrate a high order of skill in the planning, execution and completion of a piece of original research or creative scholarly work; and
* apply such skills learned during the study programme to new situations.
Education pathways
Students who complete the Master of Applied Information Technology with good grades (including the thesis) may be able to obtain entry to doctoral programmes in New Zealand or overseas.
Employment pathways
Employment opportunities for graduates will be determined by their level of achievement, previous education and experience, and choice of electives. Admission and Entry
General Academic Admission
* Candidates are required to have a bachelor's degree in Computing or Information Technology or a related subject area, with a grade average at level 7 of B or better in the final year of full-time study, or equivalent part-time study; or
* A Postgraduate Diploma in Computing or Information Technology or a related subject area, with a grade average of B or better; or
* An equivalent qualification as considered by the Centre's Postgraduate Programme Committee.

English Language Requirements
* Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 6.5 in the academic band, with no individual band score lower than 6.0; or equivalent.
Candidates will attend a selection interview.

The Master of Applied Information Technology (MAppIT) will require 180 credits, and have either a project pathway, or a thesis pathway:
* Project pathway involves a 45 credit research project;
* Thesis pathway involves a 90 credit thesis.
Students who want to take more Level 8 electives would take the project pathway, whereas those wanting to undertake more substantial in-depth research would take the thesis pathway.
The structure for the Project Pathway consists of three compulsory Level 8 modules, and one compulsory Level 9 module:
* INFO801 Project Management for Information Technology (15 credits)
* INFO802 Research in Information Technology (15 credits)
* INFO803 Research Proposal (15 credits)
* INFO901 Research Project (45 credits)
And an approved selection of modules worth 90 credits at Level 8 from the following list of electives. The selection will normally include at least one of module INFO821 Applied Information Technology Project (30 credits) or module INFO822 Information Technology Internship (30 credits):
* INFO810 Business Analysis for Information Technology (15 cr)
* INFO811 Business Intelligence (15 credits)
* INFO812 Management of Information Systems (15 credits)
* INFO813 Networks and Infrastructure (15 credits)
* INFO814 Security and Forensics (15 credits)
* INFO815 Software Development and Testing (15 credits)
* INFO816 Special Topic in Information Technology (15 credits)
* INFO821 Applied Information Technology Project (30 credits)
* INFO822 Information Technology Internship (30 credits); or
* An approved Level 8 module from another postgraduate programme.
