Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the construction diving sector with graduates able to work in onshore construction diving roles.

Graduates who gain the appropriate Certificate of Competency will be able to work as onshore construction divers to depths of up to 30 metres.

Graduates will be able work autonomously in a dive team under broad guidance and take some responsibility for the performance of others.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Carry out underwater construction diving work using self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) and surface-supplied breathing apparatus (SSBA) to 30 metres.
- Work in each position in a dive team while maintaining individual and team safety to complete onshore construction diving operations.
- Apply knowledge of chamber operation theory and therapeutic tables to assist with the pre-dive and dive operation procedures of a compression chamber during construction diving operations.
- Manage dive emergencies effectively using a variety of techniques and equipment for self-rescue and rescue of panicked and unresponsive divers, including providing emergency oxygen and hyperbaric first aid in a dive emergency.
Education pathways
This qualification is the entry level for construction diving. Graduates may progress to the New Zealand Certificate in SSBA Construction Diving to 50 metres (Level 5) [Ref: 3620].
Employment pathways
Graduates of this qualification may be employed in positions in the onshore construction diving industry that require underwater construction and infrastructure maintenance work such as:
- lake, dam, irrigation systems and inland waterway development and maintenance
- development and maintenance of sewage and water systems
- water supply systems development and maintenance
- aquaculture and fish farming net and infrastructure work
- wharf, harbour and port infrastructure development and maintenance
- hull de-fouling and in water ship maintenance
- coastal pipeline and cable laying development and maintenance.

Graduates will have gained sufficient skills and knowledge to be eligible to apply for the New Zealand Certificates of Competency Part 1 and Part 2: Construction diving: Scuba and SSBA to 30 metres including underwater tools and equipment, to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and the requirements of AS/NZS 2815 and 2299.To find out more about employment opportunities click on the CareersNZ logo, then the provider who offers this qualification.
