Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of the Diploma in Civil Engineering (Building and Construction) (Level 7) qualification is to provide graduates the advanced practical and analytical skills and knowledge of technological principles, techniques and physical procedures required for employment in the civil engineering industry including building and construction. Graduates will possess the skills and knowledge of engineering sciences, mathematics, numerical analysis, be able to communicate effectively in a professional manner to the type of activities performed, and demonstrate professional engineering practices. They will understand the level of management required for the different types of activities and be able to formulate engineering fundamentals, design engineering systems, analyse engineering problems, develop solutions for engineering problems, understand the role of technology in society and identified issues, and able to define needs and source appropriate data and appropriate use of contemporary tools to service those needs. The qualification has been designed for learners who have already completed a course of study in civil engineering at Level 5, or who have equivalent knowledge and skills, and wish to acquire more specialist knowledge and skills in accordance with industry requirements. It will also benefit individuals who are employed in the civil engineering industry and would like to gain further credentials that will support their career
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
Core Engineering Knowledge:

1. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of engineering sciences including mathematics, natural science and engineering fundamentals to defined and applied engineering procedures, processes, systems or methodologies.
Building and Construction Strand Specialised Technical Skills 2. Formulate substantiated conclusions by identifying, investigating and analysing broadly-defined engineering problems using analytical tools appropriate to the civil engineering (Building and Construction) discipline. 3. Analyse and design solutions for broadly-defined engineering problems related to civil engineering (Building and Construction) and contribute to the design of procedures, processes, systems, structures or elements with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations. 4. Investigate broadly-defined engineering problems, source relevant data, and design and conduct experiments reaching valid conclusions. 5. Select and apply appropriate resources, contemporary tools and techniques to broadly-defined engineering problems related to civil (Building and Construction) engineering, whilst understanding the limitations.

6. Demonstrate knowledge of health, safety, legal, societal and cultural issues and consequent responsibilities associated with engineering practices and solutions to broadly-defined engineering problems. 7. Demonstrate understanding, analyse and assess the adequacy and impact of engineering work in solving broadly defined engineering problems on the society and environment. 8. Demonstrate knowledge and commitment to professional ethics, responsibilities and values of engineering practice.

9. Work effectively as an individual, team member or leader of diverse teams. 10. Demonstrate effective written and presentation communication skills, understand and respond to instructions on broadly-defined engineering activities within the engineering community and the overall society.

Education pathways
Graduates of this qualification could progress to the Bachelors of Engineering Technology, the Bachelor of Engineering or other relevant qualifications such as graduate diplomas, and to post graduate study in Engineering and related areas.
Employment pathways
On completion of the qualification, graduates will be able to seek employment for roles as Quantity Surveyors, Construction Planners, Site Managers, Design Engineers, Project Managers, Building and Construction Managers in workplaces that have a technical/engineering basis relevant to the civil engineering industry. Entry Requirements
Applicants must have a diploma in Civil Engineering (Level 5) or equivalent knowledge and skills. If English is not their first language and for International students an overall IELTS band score of at least 6.0 is required with no band score lower than 5.5, or evidence must be provided of equivalent English language proficiency.
