Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is suitable for people who want to enter, or are already working in, the electricity supply industry.

This qualification is designed to provide the electricity generation sector with people who have sufficient technical and theoretical knowledge, practical skills and experience to work safely under limited supervision, meeting legislation requirements, industry practices and standards.

The optional Hydro-operation strand will provide operators with the additional skills and knowledge to operate hydro plants.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply knowledge of the electricity generation sector in New Zealand and electricity supply core theory to complete tasks as an electricity generation plant and/or control room operator.
- Operate equipment to isolate and connect electricity systems in compliance with industry standards and asset owner's specifications.
- Manage electricity supply system generation equipment as a control room operator to achieve optimum performance.
- Meet health and safety requirements while carrying out plant control room operations in the electricity supply industry.

Graduates of the Hydro-operation strand will also be able to:
- Use prime movers in hydro-electric generation plants to generate electricity and manage water resources within hydrological parameters as a hydro-electric control room operator.
Education pathways
This qualification can lead to:
- the New Zealand Certificate in Energy and Chemical Field Operations (Level 4) with strands in Advanced Steam Generation Plant Operation, Chemical Plant Operation, Geothermal Plant Operation, Petrochemical Plant Operation, and Petrochemical Transfer and Storage (with optional strands in Gas Turbine Operation, and Steam Turbine Operation) [Ref: 2307-2]
- and the New Zealand Certificate in Energy and Chemical Process Operations (Level 5) [Ref: 2308].
Employment pathways
Graduates of this qualification will be able to work as a generation plant and/or control room operator in the electricity supply industry.

Credits
