Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the Flight Training providers and Airline sectors of the aviation industry with graduates who have attained sufficient operational and theoretical knowledge and practical skills to operate as commercial pilots and/or associated support staff in flight planning and aircraft operations.

This qualification is suitable for people seeking to gain a private pilot licence, commercial pilot licence, and either a flight instructor rating or airline transport pilot licence.

The qualification has three elective strands for pilots to specialise in aeroplane flight instruction, aeroplane airline preparation, or helicopter flight instruction.

Graduates will meet the eligibility requirements to operate as commercial pilots under the appropriate New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) rules for flight instruction or air transport operations such as regional, domestic, charter, or international airlines.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply the CAANZ Commercial Pilot License and a selection of Airline Transport Pilot Licence theory subjects in air law, flight navigation, meteorology, human factors, principles of flight, and general aircraft technical knowledge for aeroplanes or helicopters.

Graduates of the Aeroplane Flight Instruction strand will also be able to:
- Instruct a wide range of students in both ground subjects and the practical aspects of flying, from the private through commercial pilot, and instrument ratings on single or multi-engine aircraft; to meet the requirements of a CAANZ Category C Flight Instructor Aeroplane, as defined and specified in CAA Rule Part 61 and applicable Advisory Circulars (AC61-18).

Graduates of the Aeroplane Airline Preparation strand will also be able to:
- Operate as the pilot-in-command on a single pilot aircraft or as the co-pilot of a multi-engine multi-crew aircraft by applying knowledge of the CAANZ Airline Transport Licence rating theory subjects for aeroplanes, to ensure effective cockpit and flight crew dynamics, whilst confidently managing automation, complex equipment and technically challenging systems present within airline air transport operations, as defined and specified in CAA Rule Part 61 and applicable Advisory Circulars (AC61-7).

Graduates of the Helicopter Flight Instruction strand will also be able to:
- Instruct a wide range of students in both ground subjects and the practical aspects of flying through the application of high-level language and literacy skills to explain complex technical concepts sufficiently to develop and enhance student pilot performance both in the air and in the classroom, from the private through commercial pilot on single-engine helicopters to meet the requirements of a CAANZ Category C Flight Instructor Helicopter, as defined and specified in CAA Rule Part 61 and applicable Advisory Circulars (AC61-18).
Education pathways
This qualification may lead on from the New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (General Aviation) with strands in Aeroplane, and Helicopter (Level 5) [Ref: 3688], or it may act as a standalone qualification.

This qualification may lead to higher level aviation study.
Employment pathways
Graduates of this qualification are able to work as commercial pilots of an aeroplane engaged in air transport operations under the relevant Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Rules or engage in flight instruction of an aeroplane or helicopter under the relevant CAA Rules, or in the associated support industries such as flight planning and aircraft operations.

In order to gain a licence to operate as a commercial pilot, graduates must meet the eligibility requirements of the Civil Aviation Act 1990, fit and proper person test (Civil Aviation Act 1990 Section 10), and the Civil Aviation Rules Part 61 Subpart E for a commercial pilot licence. Graduates of the New Zealand Diploma in Aviation (General Aviation) with strands in Aeroplane, and Helicopter (Level 5) [Ref: 3688], will already have met these requirements.
