Strategic Purpose Statement
To produce graduates who can independently demonstrate mastery of theoretically and procedurally sophisticated subject matter through a body of scholarly applied work, which is presented in a public forum and supported by a project or thesis, which could form the basis of scholarly journal articles. The work will respond to societal needs, address practice from multiple perspectives and be positioned within a wider framework of academic and applied research. This qualification prepares learners for doctoral level study, an academic career or a lead sport or exercise management role.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Master of Applied Science will be able to:
a. Demonstrate mastery of skills, techniques and methods associated with their discipline
b. Analyse sophisticated information and incorporate critique to arrive at a resolved final industry outcome or thesis
c. Integrate sustainability from cultural, social, environmental and/or economic perspectives through the body of creative work OR thesis
d. Assess and evaluate the cultural, social, environmental and economic impact of a project or subject matter
e. Present their original work in a local, national or international forum
f. Craft sophisticated creative solutions and respond to professional challenges

In addition, graduates who complete a research component of 90 credits or more in the Master of Applied Science will be able to:
a. Demonstrate a high order of skill in the planning, execution and completion of a piece of original research or creative scholarly work
b. Apply such skills learned during the study programme to new situations
Education pathways
It is expected that graduates of the Master of Applied Science will be able to gain entry into doctoral level qualifications at tertiary institutions (dependant on meeting programme-specific entry criteria). Possible programmes include the Doctor of Professional Practice at Otago Polytechnic and PhD programmes at other institutions.
Employment pathways
Graduates of this programme can expect to gain employment as expert practitioners within a professional organisational setting. This may include government or non-government sport (performance analysis or physical conditioning) and exercise for health settings. It is expected that graduates have created new knowledge in their studies and are leading the industry.
Graduates who focused on Physical Conditioning will be eligible for accreditation with the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association. Graduates who focused on Performance Analysis will be eligible for International Society of Performance Analysis accreditation. Graduates who focused on Exercise for Health will be eligible for accreditation with the New Zealand Register of Clinical Exercise Physiologists.To find out more about employment opportunities click on the CareersNZ logo, then the provider who offers this qualification.
Entry Requirements
Minimum entry requirements are
1. Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Science at level 8, or equivalent, with an overall grade of B+ (75%), for admission to the Masters by Research;
Or
Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Science at level 8, or equivalent, with an overall grade of B+ in the final 60 credits, or an equivalent postgraduate qualification of 120 credits in a related area with an overall grade of B+, for admission to the Masters by coursework.
2. International learners must achieve a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5, with no individual band less than 6.0, or equivalent, from one test taken in the preceding two years, or equivalent.

Exceptional applicants not meeting the qualification requirements, but who have appropriate documented professional experience, may also be considered for admission.

Additional criteria
All applicants who are accepted must obtain a First Aid Certificate, and complete the requirements of the Vulnerable Children's Act 2014 (including police vetting), prior to commencing classes.
