Strategic Purpose Statement
This degree qualification is for those currently working in or who aspire to work in, career development services in a leadership role within a wide range of settings.
The programme will enable career practitioners or emerging career practitioners to gain practical and current specialised knowledge and advanced skills in employee and prospective employee assessment.
Graduates will advise and support well informed future career and life decisions and to actively support the value of lifelong career development, thus enabling contribution to Aotearoa's social and economic development in a disrupted economic environment.
The programme will provide ongoing professional development for career practitioners as well as recognised qualification at degree level and will produce work ready graduates.
Graduates will be prepared for independent research and future scholarship should they elect to study at a higher level.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Bachelor of Career Development will have the skills and knowledge to provide lifelong professional, guidance and support. Graduates will be well prepared to engage in a wide range of opportunities for career development leadership, practice and employment within the selected key areas of education, coaching and business. Graduates will enable their clients to make well informed career and work/life decisions within changing economic and technological environments.
Graduates of the Bachelor of Career Development will be able to:
1. Apply specialised professional career development knowledge and career development leadership to their field of work
2. Apply analytical and critical evaluation skills within their professional practice
3. Employ professional intra- and inter-personal skills and work collaboratively to facilitate transformational change with clients.
4. Practice with current knowledge of regional and national employment and career opportunities in Aotearoa and apply in a global context.
5. Contribute to the bicultural partnership within Aotearoa in the context of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
6. Practice equality, integrity and fairness in their professional roles and work effectively with diversity
7. Critically reflect on their personal and professional development and their practice.
8. Build an integrated professional identity based on an ethical framework.
Education pathways
Graduates of the Bachelor of Career Development will be able to progress to postgraduate qualifications in this field or progress to existing masters or postgraduate programmes.
Entry Requirements
University Entrance: NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at Level 3 and 20 credits at Level 2 or higher) which must include:
14 credits at Level 3 in each of three approved* subjects as well as
Literacy* - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading, 5 credits in writing
and
Numeracy* - 10 credits at Level 1 or above (specified achievement standards, or unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627)
OR
A qualification or examination recognised as being equivalent to achievement of NCEA Level 3 (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination)

OR
A relevant qualification at Level 4 (or above) on the NZQF;

Alternative requirements:
Applicants who are unable to evidence that they meet Academic entry requirements, but who can demonstrate acquired skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, may be approved for alternative entry by the Curriculum Manager (or delegate)

English language requirements:
If English is not the applicant's first language, applicants will need to provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Table:
IELTS 6.5 Academic (no lower than 6.5 in each band),
Note: Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, may contact NMIT for an assessment
The English Language requirements for this programme are higher than the minimum set by NZQA, therefore; applicants who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance may be required to provide evidence of English Language skills.
IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test
