Strategic Purpose Statement
The Bachelor of Construction (Quantity Surveying) prepares students for work-readiness in technical and professional roles in quantity surveying in construction sectors, nationally and internationally. It provides pathways into membership in professional bodies such as the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NZIQS) and the New Zealand Institute of Building (NZIOB).
Graduate profile
The Bachelor of Construction (Quantity Surveying) (Site Management) produces graduates with strong analytical, planning, and process skills who are capable of formulating and implementing ideas for a project or a process, and who have the potential to pursue higher levels of study in their chosen specialist area. Upon successful completion of this qualification, graduates of both majors will be able to:
1. Critically evaluate design proposals in terms of initial and whole-lifecycle costs, sustainability, and buildability implications.
2. Incorporate knowledge of matauranga Maori and the Treaty of Waitangi into land development and construction-related decisions.
3. Financially administer construction contracts including preparing and managing contractual claims.
4. Apply principals of project management to plan and manage construction projects, including planning and teamwork and integrating knowledge areas such as scope, time, budget, risk, stakeholders, procurement, sustainability, resources, communication, quality, and health and safety.
5. Differentiate between potential dispute resolution processes and advise on specific dispute scenarios.
6. Critically evaluate procurement pathways and contractual arrangements and critique contracts in terms of clarity, obligations, and risk allocation and draft new and amend existing contract terms.
7. Critically evaluate construction processes through applying research skills with a view to improve performance in terms of time, quality, cost, sustainability, and client satisfaction.
8. Maintain professional competency and currency, and have the ability to progress toward further post-graduate study and specialise in fields such as commercial management, project management, or construction law, including exploring new and emerging technologies. Additional Quantity Surveying outcomes:
9. Measure and estimate the costs of construction work and prepare quantity surveying related documentation such as schedules of quantities and tender proposals.
10. Prepare preliminary financial feasibility studies and detailed cost plans through analysing legislative, physical and financial constraints and cost and revenue streams discounted to net present value. Additional Site Management graduate outcomes:
11. Measure and estimate the costs of construction work and prepare site management- related documentation such as tender proposals, material orders, and labour forecasts.
12. Develop detailed plans for implementing onsite construction by evaluating legislative and physical constraints and efficiency and productivity factors.

It is expected that graduates of the Bachelor of Construction will be able to gain entry into relevant postgraduate qualifications (dependent on meeting programme-specific entry criteria). Possible programmes include the:

Master of Engineering (Construction Management) at Canterbury University;
Master of Engineering Studies (MEngSt) in Construction Management at Auckland University.
Employment pathways
Graduates of this programme can expect to gain employment at competent practitioner level within a professional organisational setting. This may include a quantity surveying consultancy, project management consultancy, or a construction company. Specific roles may include: consultant quantity surveyor, estimator, contract administrator, contracts manager, or project manager. With experience, graduates may become senior consultants, commercial managers, divisional managers, project managers, or operate their own consultancy practices.

Entry Requirements
Admission to the Programme Entry Requirements - Quantity Surveying If you are under 20, you must have NCEA Level 3 including 14 credits at Level 3 or above in three NZQA approved university entrance subjects, and Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing, and Numeracy: 12 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of: specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects OR package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627- all three required). If you are over 20, you must supply evidence of industry experience and/or alternative relevant qualifications. Entry Requirements - Site Management Applicants must be working in the New Zealand construction industry in a supervisory role or have the opportunity to move into a supervisory role during the course of this study. Applicants must hold a New Zealand construction-related trade qualification at level 4, or similar. All applicants will be interviewed to assess suitability for the major, and to agree a path of study. Additional Requirements - both majors Those applicants who do not meet the academic entry criteria may still be given provisional entry to year one at the discretion of the Programme Leader. International students must also demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (Academic) of 6.0, with no band score less than 5.5, or equivalent, from one test taken in the preceding two years.
