Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of Graduate Diploma in Construction Management is to enable graduates to extend on previous learning to attain an occupationally-specific set of knowledge, skills, and personal attributes or dispositions. This will equip them to work in the construction industry as construction managers working with residential and commercial buildings, major construction projects and specialist areas. Graduates of the programme will be prepared to contribute in middle management roles, through all stages of projects in the construction industry. They will have a strong sense of responsibility for their own practice, and will be effective collaborators with other construction-related disciplines.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Construction Management will be able to:
1. Extend technical, applied, and legal knowledge, attained to a range of construction projects.
2. Use communication and negotiation skills in a range of organisational, professional, social, and multi-cultural contexts.
3. Work safely, ethically and productively as individuals, and collaboratively as effective members of project teams.
4. Critically review practice within the construction industry.
5. Apply knowledge of how to plan and manage construction projects.
6. Apply knowledge of how to manage the use of resources in a sustainable manner.
7. Advise on construction methodology on development options through the life-cycle of a construction project.
8. Advise on how to improve the productivity of construction projects.
Education pathways
Graduates will be able to progress to postgraduate studies in a related area.
Employment pathways
This programme will enable practising degree-qualified architectural technologists and civil engineers to change employment pathway within the construction industry.This could include the following roles:
Construction manager
Residential or commercial construction site/project manager
Property manager
Contracts supervisor/manager
Local or central government building inspector

Entry Requirements
Academic Requirements
A relevant New Zealand bachelor degree in a construction or engineering related field, for example; BCon (excluding Construction Management), BEng, BEngTech, BArch, BAS, or equivalent.

Alternative Requirements
Applicants who are unable to evidence that they meet Academic Entry Requirements, but who can demonstrate acquired skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, may be approved for alternative entry. This may include Recognition of Prior Learning. Contact Ara for advice.

Additional Requirements
Students will be required to provide a curriculum vitae, transcript or portfolio to demonstrate their understanding of timber-framed construction technologies. If they do not have this evidence applicants will need to complete GXSM500 Construction - Residential and Commercial, before commencing the programme.

English Requirements
If English is not the applicant's first language, applicants will need to provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.

Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, may contact Ara for an assessment.

IELTS 6.0 Academic (no lower than 5.5 in any subtest). For acceptable alternatives refer to the English Proficiency Outcomes Chart on Ara Institute of Canterbury's website.

Note: IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.

Applicants who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements are not required to provide evidence of English language skills.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
