Strategic Purpose Statement
The strategic purpose of the programme is to provide opportunities for ākonga, who have completed a related degree, to attain the knowledge, skills and personal attributes or dispositions to work in the construction industry as quantity surveyors. Ākonga who come into the programme are people who have recently completed a related degree or who are seeking further training and education, re-training or career change. Graduates of the programme will be prepared for work within various industry sectors including residential and commercial buildings, construction / infrastructure projects and specialist areas within the construction industry. The Graduate Diploma is an applied degree. As such, graduates are prepared to contribute to middle management roles, through the various stages of construction projects.
Graduate profile
Graduates will be able to:
1. Effectively deploy technical, applied and legal knowledge to complex construction projects
2. Effectively apply communication skills to enhance interactions within organisational, professional, social and multi-cultural contexts
3. Work safely, ethically and productively as individuals, and collaboratively as effective members of project teams
4. Research contemporary challenges in the construction industry to identify opportunities for improvement
5. Discuss principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi as they apply to the construction industry context.
6. Evaluate the impact of the construction industry, balancing economic and environmental considerations
7. Develop Procurement strategies and documentation to formulate, implement and discharge construction contracts
8. Provide strategic, budgetary and financial advice on development options through the life cycle of a construction project
Education pathways
Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Quantity Surveying will be able to progress on to postgraduate study in related area.
Employment pathways
This programme will enable practising degree-qualified architectural technologists and civil engineers to change employment pathway within the construction industry. This may include roles as:

Registered quantity surveyor (with relevant experience)
Estimator/cost planner
Quantity surveying consultant/contractor
Procurement manager
Construction cost manager
Quantity surveying academic.
Entry Requirements
Academic Requirements
A relevant New Zealand bachelor degree in a construction, for example; BCon, BEng, BEngTech, BArch, BAS, or equivalent.
Alternative Requirements
Applicants who are unable to evidence that they meet Academic Requirements, but who can demonstrate acquired skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, may be approved for alternative entry. This may include Recognition of Prior Learning. Contact Ara for advice.

Additional Requirements
Applicants will be required to provide a curriculum vitae, transcript or portfolio to demonstrate their understanding of timber-framed construction technologies.
English Requirements
If English is not the applicant's first language, applicants will need to provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart. Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, may contact us for an assessment.
* IELTS 6.0 Academic (no lower than 5.5 in any subtest)
Note:
Applicants who have achieved University Entrance requirements are not required to provide evidence of English language skills.
IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.

Credits
