Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of the Graduate Diploma in Engineering Technology with strands is to create a set of multi-disciplinary engineering technology professionals who will have the ability to undertake the high-level design, specification and project management within a specific selection of subject or discipline areas. In addition, the Graduate Diploma will provide technology professionals with multi-disciplinary skills and knowledge in one of the many disciplines by way of strands in: Mechanical, Mechatronics, Power, Water and Water Waste, and Roading / Transportation.
Each strand will have a range of knowledge which will enable graduates to provide optimal design solutions by being able to compare and evaluate the differing alternatives provided by, and within, each strand. Employers will gain graduates seeking an applied engineering understanding of the practical application of the content matter of the strand or discipline, and the technical skills to specify and manage projects.
Graduate profile
On successful completion of the Graduate Diploma in Engineering Technology, with a strand, students will have the ability to:
Apply specialised technical knowledge and skills to a specific engineering field (strand)
Apply skills in an organised approach to problem solving
Display well-developed critical thinking capabilities, including analysing, evaluating and critically reflecting on information, decisions, and behaviour to enable strategic thinking and adaptability in a constantly changing global environment
Recognise and adopt ethical dimensions inherent in business decision making, having regard for issues of social responsibility and sustainable practice
Accept responsibility for the quality of their own work outcomes, and apply independent learning skills that encourage the regular accessing of new knowledge and information
Effectively use written communication, technology, communication systems and well-developed interpersonal skills
Apply project management principles, concepts and techniques to engineering problems associated with their strand discipline.
Education pathways
Students graduating with the Graduate Diploma in Engineering Technology with one of the strands will have the appropriate skills and knowledge to enter the workforce, to go on to postgraduate study in Engineering or related areas, or to pursue further study and professional development opportunities.
Employment pathways
Graduates from the Graduate Diploma in Engineering Technology will be internationally employable in one of the strand/specialisation areas of Engineering practice.
Both domestic and international graduates will be able to quickly increase their employment opportunities in an area of skill shortage without having to complete a full degree. The area of specialisation for international students may be driven by their home country skill shortages and employability, or as a path to residency within New Zealand.
Evolution of the job market is predicted to increase the need for engineering technical staff with expertise in more than one technical discipline, and this qualification creates a path to add a specialisation, or a further specialisation to add to existing qualifications and/or experience. To find out more about employment opportunities click on the CareersNZ logo, then the provider who offers this qualification.
