Strategic Purpose Statement
The qualification is intended for people wanting to utilise a broad range of knowledge and skills that are underpinned by Mātauranga Māori, Mātauranga Taiao and contemporary science to care for, develop, sustain, enhance and manage their own environments.
The qualification meets the need, of whānau, hapū and iwi and other entities wanting to enhance their rights as kaitiaki of their natural interests and resources.
Graduates of this qualification will be able to apply a broad range of skills in upholding the mana of whenua to preserve, nurture and enrich Mātauranga Taiao for current and future generations.
The purpose of this qualification is to provide whānau, hapū and iwi with graduates who will be able to apply theoretical, technical and practical skills to be able to provide solutions and processes for environmental concerns for the benefit of their communities
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply effective communication skills and use a range of strategies to establish, maintain and manage relationships and reciprocal responsibilities
- Develop strategies to protect and manage the local environment in accordance with Mātauranga Māori and Mātauranga Taiao knowledge.
- Demonstrate how resources can be protected, managed and sustained utilising legislation to support the aspirations of whānau, hapū and iwi.
- Apply Mātauranga Māori, Mātauranga Taiao and contemporary theories, management and practices to provide solutions and processes to local environment concerns and issues.
- Exercise and examine their own rights regarding current and future environment aspirations and needs of whānau, hapū and iwi.

Further study at higher levels in the fields of conservation, environmental management, resource management and iwi environmental management
Employment pathways
Graduates of this qualification may contribute and participate in a range of Māori and general environmental/resource management roles which may include:

-Advisors and knowledge holders for whanau, hapū and iwi pertaining to the local environment including the concepts, philosophies, kawa/ tikanga, pūrakau, kōrero whakatauakī and aspirations of tangata whenua.
