Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the hotel industry with people who are able to work immediately as operators, supervisors, team leaders or departmental managers or leaders within a hotel or accommodation environment. Work readiness is ensured through a compulsory fulltime paid internship.

The qualification will benefit the community by enhancing operator requirements and entrepreneurial knowledge within the hotel and accommodation sector.

Graduates will be able to work autonomously in a range of dynamic hotel and accommodation environments with responsibilities for the management, development and learning of others.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply business and entrepreneurial strategies to identify and optimise opportunities in the hotel and accommodation industry.
- Analyse leadership skills and apply to the management and development of staff, ensuring a positive workplace culture and quality guest experience appropriate to the hotel and accommodation environment.
- Evaluate economic, environmental and social sustainability management policies and practices, to develop and implement effective strategies to manage operational and guest impact in a hotel and accommodation environment.
- Analyse and apply specialised technical, operational and systems knowledge for the hotel and accommodation sector to maximise performance in in a hotel and accommodation environment.
- Analyse industry standard operational procedures and systems to develop and evaluate compliance requirements to support continuous improvement for a hotel.
- Apply specialised technical and theoretical skills and knowledge of the hotel and accommodation industry in an operational context, and analyse policies and processes to effectively self manage and lead others, and resolve dynamic and complex problems within the workplace.
Education pathways
This diploma builds on the New Zealand Diploma in Hospitality Management (Level 5) [Ref: 2539], the National Diploma in Hospitality Management (Level 5) [Ref: 0769] and the National Diploma in Hospitality (Operational Management) (Level 5) [Ref: 1245].
Graduates of this qualification may progress to further study at the same or higher level in hospitality and tourism management or a related discipline.
Employment pathways
Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to be employed in specialist and hotel management roles, or as departmental managers or leaders within the hotel and accommodation industry.

Roles may include accommodation owners, hotel managers, accommodation multi-site managers, hotel departmental managers, front office supervisors, guest relations, hotel marketing coordinators, and/or hotel human resource coordinators, departmental co-ordinators, team and shift supervisors and hotel operational roles.To find out more about employment opportunities click on the CareersNZ logo, then the provider who offers this qualification.
Entry Requirements
Completion of an 800 hour full time paid internship in the chosen field of study, in the hotel and accommodation sector.
