Strategic Purpose Statement
The Bachelor of Architectural Studies aims to prepare students for:
Creative and technological careers in the field of architecture;
An active role in the architectural design and technological professions, and the community;
Postgraduate study and research, and study towards higher qualifications;
Taking responsibility for their own continuing professional and personal development;
Awareness, in both a national and international context, of the social responsibility of the designer and technologist within the built environment.
Graduate profile
On successful completion of this qualification at year three, students will have the ability within the practice of architecture to:
Apply design theory, critical analysis, contextual understanding, creativity and research to design and to further study.
Exercise committed, innovative, creative and independent thinking skills in solving complex problems.
Work effectively and collaboratively in single- and multi-disciplinary teams, as a leader or a follower as appropriate, managing work and projects in a timely and efficient way.
Apply principles of building science and specialised technical knowledge.
Critically apply knowledge of their roles and responsibilities in the contract documentation, administration, and construction processes, including application and interpretation of relevant legislation, regulations, and codes.
Apply a full range of relevant visual, digital, and academic literacies to communicate effectively.
Consider and adopt where necessary ethical and legal dimensions having particular regard for issues of social responsibility and sustainability.
Apply organisational, motivational, research, and creative skills to a level suitable for advanced study and recognise requirements for ongoing professional development.
Education pathways
Postgraduate study in architecture or a related field.
Entry Requirements
Entry Requirements
NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at Level 3 and 20 credits at Level 2 or higher) which must include 14 credits at Level 3 in each of three approved subjects, and:
Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:
5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing, and
Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of:
specified achievement standards, OR
unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627.
International applicants must also achieve an overall IELTS overall band score (academic) of 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in any band, or equivalent, within the last two years.
Otago Polytechnic's policy AP0520.03 English Language Requirements for Those for whom English is an Additional Language also applies.
Alternative requirements
Evidence of literacy, numeracy and an ability to study at the appropriate level. This can be through study, work and/or life experience. Otago Polytechnic literacy assessments are available.
Other requirements
Applicants must also provide a portfolio demonstrating design, graphic and/or art skills equivalent to NCEA Level 3. Applicants may be required to undertake an interview. Applicants should be motivated and talented individuals with a strong interest in and aptitude for the technological and/or creative fields of architecture.
