Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the drainlaying sector with suitably skilled tradesman drainlayers who are ready to apply for registration as a Certifying Drainlayer under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006.

The New Zealand community will benefit by having graduates who are competent to carry out and certify all drainlaying work once they have met the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board (PGD Board) registration requirements and are legally licensed to do this.

Graduates will be able to ensure both their own work, and the work of anyone they supervise, is performed competently and safely.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply the legislative responsibilities of a certifying drainlayer including the design, specification, and verification of system installations with reference to the elements in PGD Board Competencies 6(8), (c) and (d).
- Apply design processes to drainage systems, including pumps, with reference to the elements in PGD Board Competency 6(8)(a), (b), and (d).
- Manage the effect of the design and installation of drainage systems on structures and sites, with reference to the elements in PGD Board Competency 6(8)(e).
- Prepare schedules of quantities and cost jobs for drainlaying systems with reference to PGD Board Competency 6(8)(a), (b), and (c).
- Supervise others as required by Section 6(8)(g), 8(8), and 8(9) of the PGD Board Gazette notice.
- Meet responsibilities relating to managing health and safety, with reference to the elements in PGD Board Competency 6(8)(f).
Education pathways
Graduates may progress to higher level qualifications in one or more of:
- generic trade project management
- construction industry supervision
- engineering or building services specific
- business management.
Employment pathways
Graduates of this qualification will be eligible to apply for registration as a certifying drainlayer under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006.

Entry Requirements
The New Zealand Certificate in Drainlaying (Level 4) [Ref: 2661], or its equivalent, is a prerequisite for entry into this qualification.

Additionally, entrants must have passed the PGD Board competency assessment required for registration as a Tradesman Drainlayer.

Achievement of the design competencies in this qualification does not, and is not intended to, sufficiently prepare graduates to undertake duties and responsibilities at the level required of a Licensed Building Practitioner (Design).
